3 Steps to Introduce Your Dog to Another Dog

Too many people just take the leashes off, cross their fingers, and hope it turns out okay. Here are three steps we follow to introduce two dogs who have never met before.

Send this to your friend so your dogs can be friends too🐾🤗

Meet Dolcé. 🐾

Dolcé came to us at 5 years old, newly adopted by our Admin Assistant Mila, after spending his early life on a farm — far from the sights, sounds, and stimulation of city living. When he moved in with Mila, that unfamiliarity showed up as reactivity toward other dogs and people.

Reactivity is one of the most common challenges dog owners face, and it can feel so isolating! Reactive doesn't automatically mean aggressive. It's often rooted in fear, overstimulation, or simply never having learned how to process a busy world.

Here's what Dolcé's journey has looked like over 5 sessions:
✔️ Learning to read and respond to other dogs' body language
✔️ Building confidence in new environments
✔️ Practicing calm greetings with people and dogs
✔️ Finding his footing — literally and figuratively

Is he "finished"? Nope. Leash reactivity is still a work in progress, and that's okay. Progress isn't always linear.

If you have a reactive dog who struggles with socialization, know that it's never too late to start. Age, history, and past experiences don't disqualify a dog from learning — they just shape how we approach the work together. Follow the 🔗 in our bio to learn more about our School for Dogs where your dog can work on these skills with us.

We're so proud of you, Dolcé. 🤎

And P.S. shout-out to all of the helper dogs at school, like Poppy, who do the heavy lifting to teach positive dog-dog social skills. You are so loved, and we couldn't do the work we do without them!

Let's learn the beginning steps of how to calmly approach another dog! In this video, we're working with Buzz on calmly approaching another dog.

Both dogs featured in the video are reactive to dogs😱 You'd never know it by this video though. This is the magic of 🌈 Pattern Games 🌈 developed by Leslie McDevitt.

In this video we are using a combination of 5 different pattern games:
-Up/Down
-Superbowls
-1,2,3
-Look at That
-Look at That Then Enrichment

Pattern games empower dogs to make choices about how they move around triggers in the environment. By empowering our dogs to make choices, we can help make the world less unpredictable and scary.

Have a reactive dog and feeling overwhelmed? Send them our way! We would love to work with you and your dog at our School for Dogs.

It's Saturday...take 2mins to learn how to teach your dog how to breathe through their nose on a cue.

Take A Breath is a skill taught in Dr. Karen Overall's Relaxation Protocol, and in the Control Unleashed program created by Leslie McDevitt. I am very excited to have recently been admitted to the Certified Control Unleashed Instructor program, and cannot wait to bring the Control Unleashed program to Urban Pawsibilities in 2026.

I don't think I have to convince people these days that breathing through your nose is beneficial for your nervous system. Same goes for dogs! Have an anxious, reactive dog? Are they also mouth breathing all of the time? Check out this video to teach them how to breathe through their nose on cue, and help them learn the art of self-regulation.

Some of the pupils at the school for dogs this month🎓

1. Loki learning how to take and hold objects. Very nice!

2. Dandy working on his loose leash walking at Ladd's Addition.

3. Rosie crushing middle at the food trucks on Powell.

4. Mulder learning cue discrimination for positions.

5. Josie out for a walk at Powell Park.

6. Poppy facilitating Dora having the best first day of school ever.

7. Knox learning how to be a dog's dog with Loki's help.

8. Capturing Posey's double down.

9. Louie and Milo having the time of their lives.

10. Cruz working on calmly accepting petting and handling.

From jumping on guests to tugging on the leash, raising a well-mannered dog can feel like a full-time job. 🐾

That’s where our daytraining program comes in. Daytraining gives dogs the structure, practice, and environment they need to learn new skills while giving their people the peace of mind (and free time!) that comes with a calmer, better-behaved pup.

Tag a fellow dog parent who knows the struggle, and follow for a closer look at what your pup could learn with us.
