Pack walk day for Millie and Eddie!

Pack walks are a great opportunity to practice obedience, build confidence, and learn how to navigate the world around other dogs without feeling the need to interact with everyone.

The goal isn't to have every dog meet or play. It's about learning to walk together, stay focused on their handler, and remain calm and neutral around other dogs.

These real-world experiences help reinforce the skills we're building during individual training sessions and teach dogs that they can share space with others while still making good choices.

Sometimes, the biggest progress happens when dogs learn they don't have to do anything at all!

At Paws for Applause, we're working toward dogs who can confidently explore more of the world with their people.

Sometimes, the most important part of training is learning how to do absolutely nothing.

Millie is practicing settling in a new environment, relaxing on her cot, and learning to simply exist in the world around her without feeling like she needs to react to everything happening nearby.

We call this settling and neutrality. It's not about ignoring the world or forcing a dog to be still. It's about building the ability to stay calm, observe what's going on, and understand that not everything needs a response.

Whether we're at a busy park, watching people pass by, or just enjoying some time outside, these skills help build a dog who can relax and confidently navigate everyday life.

Sometimes, progress looks like doing less. And that's a pretty big deal.

A calm dog isn't one who never notices the world. It's one who can notice it without feeling the need to react to it.

Everybody give a big welcome to Remi!

This young Vizsla girl has officially joined the Paws for Applause family, and let’s just say... she’s got WIGGLES for days! Between the happy tail wags and her goofy personality, this girl is full of life!

Remi is here to work on her basic obedience, building a solid foundation so she can become a well-mannered girl who’s ready to take on more of the world with her people.

We’re excited to help this sweet, wiggly girl learn, grow, and show off what she’s capable of!

Meet Eddie!

Everyone, meet Eddie, our newest Board & Train student! 🐶💙

This sweet Australian Shepherd is here to work on building more reliable obedience, navigating reactivity, and becoming more confident in the world around her.

For dogs who struggle with anxiety or reactivity, training isn't just about teaching commands. It's also about helping them feel more comfortable, giving them the tools to handle new situations, and building trust in their handler.

Over the next few weeks, we'll be working on communication, confidence, focus, and making better choices even when distractions or big feelings show up.

We're excited to watch this girl grow in confidence and see what she's capable of!

Everyone, meet Millie, our newest Board & Train student!

At 10 months old, she has plenty of puppy energy, a whole lot of love to give, and apparently a special talent for accidently knocking over tiny humans.

Her Board & Train will be all about learning how to slow down, listen, control those teenage impulses, and make better choices around the people she loves most.

Because being a big, goofy puppy is fun...
.. but being a big, goofy puppy with manners is even better.

We're excited to see how much this girl grows over the next few weeks!

🐾 Training creates freedom.

One of my favorite parts of dog training is watching a dog go from simply learning commands to actually being able to enjoy the world with their person.

Being able to sit at a picnic table, relax around distractions, explore new places, and just enjoy some time together—that’s what the training is really for.

Because at the end of the day, I don’t want your dog to only be well behaved in your living room.

I want you to be able to take your dog with you and enjoy more of life together. ❤️

Well-behaved dogs get to explore more of the world. 🌎🐕

Training Tip Tuesday: Building Your Dog's Confidence

One of my favorite ways to build a dog's confidence is by encouraging them to get up onto different objects in a safe environment.

Whether it's a rock, park bench, log, or retaining wall, navigating new surfaces helps dogs:

Build confidence in themselves
Learn to thinjk through new challenges
Strengthen their trust in you as their guide

The key is to start with easy, stable objects and let your dog work at their own pace. Never force them, confidence grows through positive experiences and small successes.

Dogs of all ages, sizes, and breeds can benefit from confidence building exercises like these!

Look at Ace go!

When Ace first started working through his anxiety, simply existing in a new environment was difficult. During this exercise, it would take him nearly 20 minutes just to relax enough to sit down.

Now? He chooses to lay down in less than a minute!

One of my favorite exercises is what I call the "Out of the Box" drill. Instead of asking for commands like 'sit', 'down', or 'place', I simply find a new environment, sit down, and give the dog the freedom to make the choice to settle on their own.

The goal isn’t ovedience in that moment, it's teaching the dog that they don't have to react to every person, dog, sound, or movement around them. They learn that it's okay to simply exist.

This exercise helps build confidence, emotional regulation, and trust, while giving dogs the opportunity to make good decisions on their own.

This is what consistency, patience, and clear leadership can accomplish.
