Discovery Early Learning Center

Discovery Early Learning Center Discovery Early Learning Center is a place were childhood is protected, respected, and celebrated. Our program is based on the belief that children grow best when they are a part of a loving, connected community of hands-on learners and through Play.

A community of learning based on the belief that children learn through hands-on activities, social interactions, and authentic play-based experiences.

Here is an example of how children plan, record and reflect IN play motivated by their own interests. This happened a few months ago, maybe late March. The bugs were starting to come out and the children found a beetle, together they discussed what the beetle might need or like. They collected natural materials and constructed a habitat.

Uplifting Early Childhood

Inclusive practice is a bit of a tricky term. Some might take it to mean including children of all abilities and needs in the general routines of a room or centre. Equality amongst learners.

Whereas others might see inclusion as adapting our practices and environment to the individual needs of children. I more align with the latter. I think if we create inflexible routines, environments and practices and expecting ALL children to fall inline with them - we are setting ourselves and our children up for inevitable failure.

Being responsive is about recognising that things aren’t as they should be - that not all children are thriving in a certain environment and with certain practices and then changing what we do and how we approach our practice to get the best outcomes for all children through different means.

Being inclusive is more than just including children in set, unfamiliar routines but understanding that children see things and learn differently and being able to re-shape our routines to meet their individual needs.

A child’s capacity to learn is a direct result of how we see them as capable, competent learners who are different and unique and need to be responded to with an environment and practices that acknowledge those differences.

Hundreds of studies prove the awesome benefits of play, and one of the most profound is its use as a natural and powerful self-therapy tool. Children use play instinctively to process both environmental stress and inner-conflict. Play therapy helps them to make sense of confusing and bothersome events they might have been exposed to, eases worry and fear. It’s especially valuable in the early years, before children can verbalize their feelings. Children “play out” disturbing feelings when they can’t tell us what’s wrong or ask us “What’s that?” or “Why?”

Here's how we can encourage play therapy…
