In order to learn to count and the basics of math, young children need to handle, touch, move, carry, dump, and pour "stuff". Rote memorization and intangible methods of learning numbers such a worksheets and daily count and point methods only create an allusion of understanding. Providing an environment rich in loose parts, manipulatives ,and the "stuff" of childhood supports a young child's natural urge to learn these skills through self initiated play.

Have you heard the wonderful news??!!

Discovery is growing!

This June we will move to become the sole tenants of the entire first floor of Saint Peters Episcopal Church!

This wonderful new space will allow us to grow from two to five classrooms! We are thrilled to be able to extend our reach offering high-quality play-based early childhoods to more children of Poolesville.

We have openings and are registering now for summer and fall programming. If you are looking for a child-centered place for childhood shoot us a message to set up a tour. We will be holding an info night in the parish hall at the church Monday at 6:30, February 3rd. We would love to share our program with you!

Children learn through play – it shouldn’t stop at preschool

One-quarter of children who start school aren't developmentally ready. Play-based learning in the early years of school can help with the transition, as well as providing a host of other benefits.

The ability to interact with peers while at play provides space for deep connections and the sharing of ideas and perspectives. With that comes emotions and conflict. We are often told to redirect children away from such conflict, but I’d argue that the real learning is found in moments of conflict. A child is forced to practice impulse control, think critically to get their point across, use language to get their perspective across while also taking in the perspectives of others. Navigating these moments is the magic of play ❤
