Our dear friend, Claudia Wayman, passed away, this morning. Some of our new neighbors , did not have the pleasure of meeting her. Claudia was our first Lake Association President. Gene & Claudia, built their home on the south side of the lake , at the end of Happy Acres Trail. (Adam Houin now). They raised a big, wonderful family, who enjoyed the lake to its fullest! Family get togethers, 4th of July decorated floats, and lighting up our skies with amazing fireworks! Gene passed away in 2007. Claudia sold the Lake home, soon after, to be closer to her family.

She will sure be missed , but never forgotten.

Fish swim down to the depths of the lake during the winter where the water is warmer and where dissolved oxygen is more abundant.

4 days and the dude is still at our residence. I had him scanned. He doesn't have a chip. He has definitely been with a family or people daily. He listens so well. He comes. He stays. He stops hissing when I say stop.
He loves to be pet. He is a real lover.

If someone is missing him he deserves to go home.

Big news indeed. We do have phragmites on Myers Lake but isn't a big problem.....at this time.

Since 1998, researchers have been testing two species of moths as biocontrol agents for invasive Phragmites, and the results are promising!

Biocontrol uses living organisms to naturally suppress a pest by reintroducing natural enemies, like these moths, to deliver a targeted approach to control invasive species.

The larvae of these moths bore into the stem of Phragmites, killing young plants and stunting the growth of mature ones.

After years of testing to ensure that these moths only feed on invasive Phragmites and pose no risk to other plants, they were released to determine their effectiveness in the field. By 2023, the moths were able to reduce Phragmites by 92% at the release sites, offering a potential cost-effective, long-term solution!

It's that time of year when everyone is wondering what to do with the leaves.

Here is an article written for Lake Maxinkuckee Environmental Fund.

Although some may not see the harm in blowing their leaves into the lake, since leaves are โ€œnatural,โ€ it is the cumulative effect of everyone thinking this ...

Good information from a trusted source.

It's that time of year again! The weather's getting colder, and the leaves are beginning to change. ๐Ÿ‚ At the time of this post, Northern Indiana is at its peak autumn color! During this time, the leaves are still on the trees but are darker hues of brown and orange. Soon, they will fall and end up on our lawns, gutters, and even in lakes. ๐Ÿ Leaves bring excessive nutrients to our lakes, which fuels algae and w**d growth in the springtime.

Instead of sweeping these leaves into our lakes and streams, you can bag them following local guidelines, OR if you're feeling adventurous, start a compost pile!

We've outlined all the composting tips and tricks you'll need to start this fall! Is composting not your jam? Click the link in the bio to learn about other ways to keep excessive nutrients out of your lake!
