Fear free medicine is often about what EACH patient needs to be comfortable - and they all need something different to be less anxious!

Precious Coco was adopted by her mom several months ago and has been so scared to even have a leash placed on her or have her momma pet her much of the time. Mom has been so patient with her and provided a safe home ❤️. She and Dr. Dunnett worked together with some calming medication, very slow and quiet words and movements and were able to complete an exam, vaccines, AND a toenail trim on miss Coco with minimal stress!

Coco even stayed on the couch afterward with the doctor, showing us she was much more comfortable and knew we weren't there to hurt her 🥰

What is one of the most important aspects of your pet's medical care? Dental health!! It often goes under the radar, but untreated periodontal disease leads to irreversible, destructive damage of your pet's mouth and can cause pain, abscesses, and the spread of bacteria and inflammation to the rest of the body. Research shows dental disease has a negative effect on the liver, kidney, and heart.

It starts with plaque forming within 24 hours and becoming tartar (calculus) within several days, followed by gingivitis (gum inflammation). As the disease progresses, the bone around tooth roots is damaged and erodes, the gingiva can swell and create pocketing, and the tooth roots can become exposed.

WHAT CAN YOU DO AS AN OWNER FOR YOUR PET'S DENTAL HEALTH?

🪥 Brush their teeth as often as possible with a veterinary formula toothpaste, ideally 1-2 times daily

🍭 Use dental chews or treats with the VOHC approval

🫗 Water additives with the VOHC seal for continuous care

🩺 Schedule dental cleanings with your veterinarian as needed to address tartar buildup, take dental xrays, and give the teeth a thorough clean
