This is a great exercise to do with any dog, you need three things.

1. Patience. We suck at this as much as our dogs do.

2. The correct distance. Sometimes that means you can be closer, and sometimes you need more space.

3. Good timing. Knowing when to reward, when to add leash pressure, and when to push harder and pull back.

It has absolutely nothing to do with a woman versus a man, it has everything to do with the mentality of the individual. Some of the best handlers I’ve ever seen have been women.

At the end of the day, no matter what, you need to have control of your dog.

On a serious note, if you want to take a few years off of your dog’s life, overfeed them and keep them fat.

It’s so easy, minus a heath issue, to have a dog at proper weight. Feed them the best food you can afford. (Add in human food that is leftover in their bowl), exercise them daily, and keep track of their weight every month. If your dog is too big for you to pick them up and weigh them, stop by your local pet store or vet to check out your dog’s weight. The more you track, the faster you will notice a problem. It’s hard to see when you are with your dog every single day.

This samoyed hasn't made any dog friends, and snapping at dogs on first greeting isn't helping him be popular with other dogs. I'll post the long form video of this interaction, but here's the skinny.

At the intro, he was biting and fence and trying to snap, not because he is "aggressive" but because he was never shown otherwise. When I let crunch out, his first instinct was to do the same again, and he was met with the appropriate level consequence, that's not how we meet dogs.

Once he learned that wasn't his best option, guess what we got to see, his puppy side come out of him that he never got to express beforehand. (He was later placed on a long leash when I trusted him not to snap/bit captain Crunch).

What does a leash correction look like while using a plastic prong collar?

VERY IMPORTANT, introduce your dog to light leash pressure for a few minutes on your figure 8's before you jump right into correction phase. Corrections are for non compliance to known commands, not for a dog not knowing what to do. Dewey has had enough training to know when I see "Heel" and turn, that he needs to turn with me.

If you can teach your dog how to hold a sit in public, people will start calling you the dog whisperer. that's how low the bar is for a well-behaved dog. That being said, it's something that every single dog should be able to, and can with training, do.

When you stop, teach your dog to sit, and hold it, periodically through your walk. whether that be at the store, your neighborhood, or even the inside of your home, reps makes perfection.

Your dog knows drop it, but doesn't listen?

First, always ask yourself is my dog confused, or being disobedient. If you can't tell, always default to they are confused, it makes you a better dog handler, and forces you to teach more. If they are being disobedient to a known command, Say It Once. Give your dog time to respond, they aren't a computer, and correct if needed.

Sidenote, this dog is typically aggressive with people. We had him, and his sister, off-leash with 4 new people today. Awesome job, and I'm excited to share more of his training.

Whose dog can do this during feeding time? Feeding your dog is so much more than just putting food in a bowl and walking away. It’s a very important moment where you and your dog should be on the same team, working together, not versus each other.
