Always a good reminder to share with the pet owners in your community!❤️
Do You Know Me Monday? Let's talk about microchips!
This female dog entered our shelter on May 16 as a found pet. She was found at 4400 Block Bradwood Ter, Fort Wayne. We scan every pet who enters our shelter for a microchip and she ended up having one, yay! Unfortunately, we discovered the microchip had never been registered through the microchip company with the owner's information. When this happens, our dispatchers will contact the company to see if they can give us information. This is an extra step that can be avoided and keeps your pet here longer.
We wanted to use this situation as an opportunity to educate about microchips and how to use them most effectively.
Once a microchip is implanted, you will be given instructions on how to register the microchip with your information through the chip company's website. Sometimes a shelter or rescue will do it for you after adoption, but make sure they explicitly let you know if they are taking care of that and how to update information in the future. They will provide you with the microchip number and company.
If you purchased your dog/cat from a reputable, ethical breeder, your dog/cat will have a microchip typically with the breeder's information registered to the chip. Be sure to check with your breeder on what microchip company they used and ask for the microchip number (if you don't already have it) so you can ensure your personal information is on there and up to date. Thankfully, a convenient Microchip Registry Lookup system can be found on AAHA's website > https://www.aaha.org/for-veterinary-professionals/microchip-registry-lookup-tool-aaha-find-your-pets-microchip-registry/
If you have a pet that was gifted or rehomed to you, be sure to get them scanned for a microchip at a vet clinic or Humane Fort Wayne's scanning station to ensure you do not have someone's stolen/missing pet and to update the chip information with your personal contact information. The whole body should be scanned just to check that a chip didn't migrate.
Lastly, any time you move or change phone numbers, don't forget about your pets! Their microchip's linked information should be updated ASAP.
If you would like to get your dog or cat microchipped, be sure to take advantage of our low-cost Chip Chip Hooray: $5 Microchips Event happening this Saturday, May 23! Thank you to 24Pet for kindly providing the microchips for this community event. 🐾💙
