From 1980 to 1983, I was lucky enough to be part of the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) crowd, a time that holds some of my dearest memories. I was just 20 when I first stepped into that vibrant scene—a wide-eyed kid, as I see it now. Roy Cooper was the undisputed king of the rodeo during those four years, a larger-than-life figure who left an indelible mark on me and countless other young fans. To us, he was a legend.
What made the rodeo world so special was its sense of family. Whether you were a competitor, a spectator, or somewhere in between, everyone felt connected, and sooner or later, you’d cross paths with just about everybody. I didn’t know Roy as well as some, but the moments I shared with him—brief as they were—became cherished memories that I carry to this day.
Rest in peace, my friend. I can just imagine Mel Potter and Mike Cervi up there, running low on stories. They’re surely ready for some fresh tales, and I know you’ll deliver.
