Okay guys. i know, i know. I keep going on about enrichment. But that is because it is so crucial to having a happy, healthy, well rounded pup! I promise you this is so vital for your dogs π
When you own a dog, you should be doing research on your specific breed. You NEED to know what types of toys and exercise your dog likes in order to fulfill their day to day needs. If you have a mix, like most of us do, all you should do is pay close attention to the different things they specifically enjoy. If your dog digs, bites, chews, pulls, runs, retrieves, points, whatever it is, PAY ATTENTION. This is your insight into what enrichment your specific dog needs.
All too often i have clients who see behaviors in their dogs that they want to change or stop. ( digging up their yard, chewing on things in the house, pulling on the leash, etc)
What we need to be adding to the conversation is, what are our dogs trying to tell us? For instance, if your dog likes to dig up the yard, most likely there's some terrier in there or they just like to dig ! My solution? Give them something they can dig that is safe and appropriate, like a kiddie pool with dog safe soil! Give them that outlet!
If you liked to draw or knit, or run track, or box, don't you think it would be cruel to take that away from you if i deemed it inappropriate? Why not give our dogs that same grace?
of course what this discussion isn't bringing to the table is the topic of physical enrichment. That's a whole other conversation. It absolutely is important to the whole topic of a fully enriched dog. But that's for another time
