Note to Perspective New Owners
One of the benefits of getting a new family member from a preservation breeder is the expectation of a higher level of professionalism, skill, knowledge and experience. All of these traits are designed to provide a dog to you that has been bred to preserve specific breed traits, and hopefully health and longevity.
In order for this to work however there are certain expectations that are your responsibility as a new owner.
1. When you commit to a litter, it is very important that you mean it; that your word is your bond. Or breeders will start imposing non-refundable deposits..again. When you commit to a puppy, the breeder has likely turned away other equally wonderful families. If you decide you don't want a puppy hours before the puppy is due to go to your home, it can cause catastrophic consequences for the breeder and the puppy.
2. You don't list yourself as eligible for a puppy with multiple breeders. Find a breeder that you connect with; a breeder that is knowledgeable and skillful; one that will be there for you, long after you take your puppy home. The world of breeders is small. When you behave poorly with one breeder, that experience is easily shared with other breeders. You will be held accountable.
3. If you are experiencing stress, trauma, uncertainty or drama in your life...it is NOT a good time to get a puppy. While it may be a distraction for you and your issues, it is a disaster for the puppy to bring it into that home situation; and potentially a disaster for the breeder. Thinking that a puppy will be a suitable distraction for your issues is an incredibly misguided reason for getting a new animal in your life.
4. If you have questions about the suitability of this puppy for your or your family, CALL THE BREEDER. These are discussion that should occur BEFORE you commit to a puppy. Asking questions from others who are unaware of the breed, dogs in general, or others will less credentials than the breeder is not the answer, nor will it give you the best solution.
