Cue Oasis: "You and I are gonna live forever"

Research indicates that dog owners walk significantly more than non-owners, often accumulating an extra one million steps per year, which is linked to a 24% reduction in all-cause mortality. This “million-step advantage” primarily stems from the daily requirement of dog walking, which transforms exercise from an optional activity into a non-negotiable responsibility.

To elaborate, the “one million steps” figure is derived from the fact that dog owners walk an average of 22 to 30 minutes more per day than those without dogs. Dog owners are four times more likely to meet the recommended 150 minutes of weekly physical activity.

Unlike general exercise, dog walking is a purposeful activity driven by the pet’s behavioral needs, making it easier to maintain even in poor weather. On average, dog owners take roughly 2,760 steps per day, which totals nearly one million extra steps over the course of a year.

This consistent, moderate-intensity exercise provides several biological and psychological benefits that contribute to a longer life. Regular walking strengthens the heart, lowers blood pressure, and reduces the risk of stroke and heart disease. Studies show a 31% lower risk of cardiovascular death among dog owners.

Interacting with dogs also lowers cortisol (stress hormone) while increasing “happy hormones” like oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine. The extra movement is associated with a reduced risk of obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, and certain cancers.

Walking a dog also encourages social interaction and connection to nature, which combats loneliness and depression - critical factors for longevity.

Today we assisted with a found puppy and headed to to get him scanned and taken care of.

While we were there we stopped to see Butters (first slide) as he has been in there a week after being rescued by our friends at and just got off hold due to some respiratory issues.

while we were there, we took a stroll through the shelter to check out all the pups that were in there.

This is only a small fraction of the amount of dogs that are in the shelter and looking for their forever homes.

Please consider adopting or fostering or volunteering your time.

We will sponsor Butter’s adoption fee if you decide she is a good dog for you!

Thank you to the staff at ACCT for all your hard work and dedication. I’ve been fortunate enough to be partnering with you all for the last 14 years and I am grateful for the work you do. I know it is thankless, and some people are downright, just nasty, but if more people spend time trying to find solutions to ending this overcrowding of shelters we would be in a better place.

Go check out the pups…they love when you stop and say hi!
