Farewell - Saying goodbye in comfort

The little dog greeted me enthusiastically when I arrived for her in-home euthanasia appointment, her bottom wiggling frantically as she licked my hand obsessively.

Her owner explained that this kind of activity normally results in her staying in bed the whole next day due to her severe arthritis.

We chatted, and completed the paperwork while we waited for her other owner to arrive - at which point there was another burst of frantic joy as she then ran between the three of us getting lots of pets and love and attention.

Just as I was about to administer the sedative, her owner said,

"She'll be in bed for a week after all this activity"

Roxy was already 9 years old when we brought her home from the SPCA.
We didn't know how long we would get to enjoy her company, but it turned out to be 7 years.

Being a caretaker is difficult. Managing a pet with multiple illnesses and multiple medications or treatments is difficult. If you have been doing this, there’s something you should know: once your pet is gone, it will be difficult NOT doing those things.

I learn something during every visit I do to help a family say goodbye to their companion in the comfort of home.
Saying goodbye to Aiden yesterday taught me that if a dog wants to say hi, it's important to remember go over and say hi to them properly - especially if the dog can't get up.
Aiden was so beautiful - when he lifted his head from where he lay on the sofa and looked over to me, I thought I saw it in his eyes. I asked the family if they thought he wanted me to go over and say hi and they told me yes so I went over and we made friends.
I often try to avoid getting too emotionally close to a dog during my visits, because then saying goodbye to them makes me sad, but sometimes I have to jump in and accept being sad for a while ❤🐕🐾🌈❤
