Yes, most times we do need to find out how to get up and do physical work with living breathing animal in our life. But- not always.

It is great to have supplemental activities on hand that require very little for you but can elevate a "bare minute " day to a "new and fun" day for your dog.

Get creative with your recycling, and remember, you can still recycle it after your dog shreds it.

Save your brain space! If you try to do everything at 100% you will burn out.

If you have loose leash goals- pivot when needed. You can use play and training before the walk, use a different walking tool for less structured walking, or just a longer leash. You CAN put fewer braincells in the start of the walk when your dog is least likely to focus.

Don't judge yourself for utilizing management in ways that do not affect your training.

Once your dog is fulfilled and satisfied THEN you can whip out the loose lead practice!

I almost didn't do this, but I figured that the potential to show what doing the work REALLY looks like is worth a few people thinking I'm over sharing.

Mim is an energetic Jack Russell Terrier and I am a neurodivergent dog trainer whose body thinks winter is a time to do literally nothing.

This time of year so many people start to plan to purchase puppies for their holiday.

Last month breeders already started breeding to capitalize on this boom of demand.

It is not a smart plan to bring a new pup home during the holidays, because of how big an undertaking bringing a new pup home is!

So, keep the puppy and the holiday separate.

Gift a promise collar to your child, letting them know that this process will involve them every step of the way.

Give your family member wanting a dog a gift card for the local pet supply store, to help them bring home a new pet.

Wait to gift yourself a dog until the holidays are over, so they can enjoy peace and routine.

What happens when my dog doesn't take rewards?

In Positive Reinforcement training we use motivators, like food or play, to teach dogs most behaviors. So it can be confusing to a pet parent when their dog won't take rewards!

But fear not- this is not a reason to give up or start using pain!

While some dogs prefer to use less conventional rewards (sprays of water, human excitement, sniffing) most dogs can work for food and toys. It may just take looking out for these three common reasons why!

I had the immense pleasure of meeting a breeder dog for and got to see her in action.

It is so important that she is able to focus and perform in busy situations and places, because her pups will be service dogs like she is! (Ps- a service dog doesn't need to wear a vest, but most to)

Not long ago I had a client whose dog refused to walk 9 times out of ten, unless there was a second person with her.

This dog flinched and pulled back on her harness at every moderately loud sound. But, with the excitement of a new person she could "power through".

This was not a sign that she was stubborn, but a sign that she was uncomfortable about being exposed to the world outside of her parking lot.

If your dog freezes or "hits the brakes" on their walk, it is time to see a trainer and find out how to bring joy back into your walk!

When you look for a trainer you need to make sure that your goals are in their wheelhouse.

Not every dog trainer is the same!

An agility trainer will not teach cooperative care the way a trainer who specializes in it would. And a petco trainer will not teach leashwork like I do!
