Changing the Way People Think About Feeding Their Dogs

About 24 years ago I read a book called The Nature of Animal Healing, written by Dr. Martin Goldstein DVM. He talked about commercial dog food production, vaccinations, and introduced the idea of holistic pet care. I was sickened, motivated, and hooked on doing better for my dogs Jerry and Lucie. I promptly tossed two bags of kibble... right

into the dumpster! Since then I've had 15 dogs of my own, plus another 80 or so fosters, and served home cooked meals that became more sophisticated as the years passed. In 2014, my little black lab mix Lucie was diagnosed with a liver adenoma and then hemangiosarcoma, despite being on good food most of her life. She put herself on raw food, we pursued holistic and homeopathic therapies, never said the word cancer in front of her, and she outlived her expiration date by more than 3 years most of which were symptom free. I left corporate America and a 17 year career in management consulting to start this business and be at home with her as she grew old... and every single thing I learned with her through her life and especially throughout her illness made motivated me to pursue excellence in sourcing, recipes, and individual ingredients and proportions to help her live not just longer but really well despite with the doctors predicted for her. Every dog I've loved, and each dog I've served through Lucie's Legacy renews my commitment to excellence, service, and wellness through nutrition.

Moisture content.  What difference does it make?

The moisture content of a raw product affects the nutrition profile (protein and fat content and calories) and can radically impact the overall volume that must be fed to meet the dogs’ needs. Also worth nothing that how beef is sourced (in other words what did the cow eat - grass, corn, GMO corn, etc) also affects nutritional value. Corn fed = higher sugar content in the meat, lower protein and omega content. That means you have to feed more volume to get the same calories and supplement omegas vs. grass fed.

The photos below were taken 2h 30m apart to showcase the minimal moisture in our nutrient- and calorie-dense Raw All Beef for Dogs blend. No big “moisture” puddles!

Cost per pound is not a relevant shopping/comparison metric. Cost per dog per day is!

Friends, do not miss this store. They carry other dog snacks, plus all 5 of Lucies raw blends. And you can find human products from just about every producer Lucies Legacy knows and loves for yourselves. It is one of my favorite shopping experiences… For sure, the local farmers market, but open seven days a week.

So. Do you buy those expensive greens powders and juices? I make my own! Today I am kind of clearing out the refrigerator and trying to think fun things to do for the dogs with stuff that otherwise is going to be thrown away. The first photo is a combination of papaya, mango, watercress, spinach, tomatoes, and a strawberry banana protein shake I bought on sale for myself, but didn’t love! To that I added, Reishi mushroom, L glutamine, and mustard seed.

The second photo is a combination of honey, vanilla yogurt, green beans, mustard seed, and broccoli florettes that have been shaved and allowed to sit for an hour to allow the micro nutrient profile to develop, avocado, turmeric & black pepper, green bean, and bacon grease!

If you happen to have ice cube trays, you could freeze these into cubes, but my guys eat it right off the spoon!

I find that anything green we have to build general enthusiasm by giving to the Stanley the Lab first… And then the shorthairs will follow😂. Needless to say, the brown concoction with bacon grease was the biggest hit. BOTH serve great nutritional purpose!
