Unpopular opinion: Your dog doesn't have to love everybody. 🐾

Not every dog wants to be petted by strangers, play with every dog at the park, or make friends with every person they meet.

And that's okay!

A well-trained dog doesn't have to be a social butterfly. They just need to know how to exist around people, dogs, and distractions without making it everybody else's problem.

Sometimes neutrality is a whole lot more valuable than friendliness.

Does your dog love everybody, or are they more of an "I'll tolerate your existence" kind of dog? 😂

Setting boundaries with your dog isn't mean, it's actually one of the most loving things you can do for them. Dogs thrive on consistency, structure, and knowing what's expected of them. Boundaries aren't about taking away their freedom or fun; they're about giving them the confidence and security that come with clear expectations. You can love your dog to pieces and still tell them no. In fact, sometimes that's exactly what loving them looks like.

Like it or not, every second you spend with your dog, you're either training or untraining it.

Do you set boundaries and actually hold them?

My dog is not allowed to jump on people.

My dog is not allowed to lick (I know, I know, but I just hate it).

My dog is not allowed to pull on the leash.

Etc. Etc.

The biggest difference I see between my clients and myself? Consistency.

I don't "sometimes" allow Stetson to jump on people.

I don't "usually" tell her no to licking.

I don't "mostly" not let her lean into and pull on the leash.

Not sometimes. Not usually. Not mostly.

ALWAYS.

Decide what your boundaries are, stick to them, and see how quickly your dog becomes easier to live with.

P.S. Your rules don't have to be my rules. But whatever rules you choose, your dog needs to know they don't change depending on your mood.

Good dog training isn't always about what your dog is doing. Sometimes it's about what they're not doing. 🐾

While I'm riding my horse, my dog is perfectly content hanging out in the corner of the arena. No chasing, no wandering off (usually, anyway 😉), no constantly being told what to do. Just calmly watching the world go by.

That's what I work towards in training. Teaching dogs how to settle, respect boundaries, and make good decisions even when life is happening around them. A well-trained dog doesn't always need a job. Sometimes their job is simply to do nothing.
