I want to share a personal update about Buddy, my mom’s sweet 10-year-old basset hound, who’s been on a challenging journey since April.
It started when my mom noticed small drops of blood and dried blood around Buddy’s p***s. After several vet visits, bloodwork, ultrasounds, and a urine test, we got the difficult news: Buddy has transitional cell carcinoma (urothelial carcinoma), a form of prostate cancer. Unremovable and untreatable for a cure.
The first oncologist gave us some hard numbers to consider: without treatment, Buddy might have 2 to 4 months; with piroxicam (NSAID), which we started right away, maybe 4 to 6 months; and with chemo or radiation, possibly 6 to 8 months.
We immediately put Buddy on the same integrative protocol that a dear family friend and former client, Kairi, has been on. Kairi was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma two years ago and was given about 300 days. And thanks to her integrative care plan, including the Yale vaccine, she’s still cancer free and living life to the fullest.
Today we were able to get Buddy in with the integrative oncologist we trust (the same one caring for Kairi). During Buddy’s exam, she confirmed that the protocol we’re using is a good fit for him, and that chemo remains an option down the road if needed.
But here’s a hopeful twist we weren’t expecting: Buddy is actually a candidate for the Yale vaccine, the same immunotherapy that has helped keep Kairi cancer free.
We’ve decided to move forward with the vaccine and will monitor him closely. For now, Buddy is his happy, loving self, showing no signs of illness aside from some discolored p*e (pressure the mass on his prostate is putting on his urinary tract).
And something that felt like a little sign of hope - after checking in at the oncologist’s office today, the song Rhiannon started playing in the waiting room. That’s the song I named my Doberman Rhia after, to honor my dad. Somehow, it always seems to play when something important is happening.
We’re holding onto hope, gratitude, and the reminder that the work we do matters - for our clients, and for the animals we love most.
