Every animal deserves comfort, dignity, and gentle care—especially when they’re facing health challenges. Keep in mind, little critters often hide their illness or injury for as long as they can. Do frequent checks of their ears, eyes, weight, etc to promptly recognize any changes.

Small animals—especially rats, mice, and other pocket pets—are experts at hiding illness. What starts as occasional sneezing or subtle breathing changes can quickly turn into something more serious if missed early.

Here are signs to watch for:
• Frequent sneezing (not just one-off)
• Audible breathing (clicking, wheezing, or “honking”)
• Faster or more effortful breathing
• Red staining around eyes or nose (porphyrin)
• Decreased energy or appetite

Respiratory infections are one of the most common health issues we see in small mammals, and early intervention makes a big difference.

• Use low-dust bedding, like h**p
• Keep cages clean and well-ventilated
• Avoid candles, sprays, and strong scents in the households
• Monitor behavior daily—small changes matter
