Here’s Patriot. You might remember him from some videos a few months back when he was quite a bit younger.

He’s been working on more advanced handling lately, but today we took a break from the drills and put him in a real waterfowl setup.

First time working around decoys. First dead duck out of the water.

He’s picked up plenty of bumpers in the water, but a duck takes a little different bite and some dogs have to figure that out. Patriot took a minute to sniff a few decoys and check things out, then stayed on the job and went and got his bird.

It’s fun to watch the training start to come together and see a young dog figure out how all those little pieces apply to the real thing.

A gunshy dog isn’t always a lost cause.

Every year at the Hunt Expo, we have the same conversation over and over.

Someone stops by to talk bird dogs with us, and almost immediately says:

“My dog is gunshy.”

Usually they say it like the conversation is already over — like that one problem automatically means their dog can never hunt.

But that’s not always the case.

After nearly 20 years of training bird dogs, Tyce has worked with a lot of dogs that developed gun sensitivity or became gunshy for one reason or another. And while there are never guarantees with a dog, many of them can make significant progress when the problem is approached correctly.

The biggest mistake we see is trying to rush it, force the dog through it, or simply hoping that more exposure to gunfire will make the problem disappear.

It can make it worse.

That’s exactly why Tyce created Gunshy Fix — to walk dog owners through the same process he uses to evaluate gunshyness, rebuild confidence, and carefully reintroduce the gun.

We’ve talked about Gunshy Fix on The Bird Dog Podcast, but realized we’ve never really introduced it here.

A few months ago we shared a reel about knowing when to stop a training session with a puppy. When they start getting tired or losing focus, you want to keep it fun, end on a good note, and leave them wanting more.

With an older, more mature dog, that can look a little different.

This is Riggs, a potential stud candidate we’ve had the privilege of training. Here he’s working through some hand-casting drills, which are really all about teamwork and trust. The dog has to learn to follow your direction instead of always doing what he thinks is right.

That matters a lot when you’re duck hunting. There are going to be times when the dog doesn’t know where the bird went down, and he has to trust you to guide him to it.

Riggs had been working for a while here and was starting to lose a little bit of focus. With a puppy, we probably would have called it. But with a mature dog, sometimes that’s exactly when you need to push through a little.

We cleaned things up, made sure he was following directions, and had him get the bumpers in the order we wanted.

He stuck with it, kept a great attitude, and finished really well.

You still want to end on a high note. But as dogs mature, part of training is teaching them that they can keep working and stay with you even when they’re a little tired or distracted.

We're looking for someone to help us grow.

Over the years, Utah Bird Dog Training has grown into much more than a dog training business. Between training dogs, creating content, developing educational programs, producing podcasts, and pursuing new business ventures, there are more opportunities than one person can tackle alone.

We're looking for an Operations & Growth Coordinator—someone who loves marketing, content creation, entrepreneurship, and solving problems.

This isn't a typical desk job. Some days you'll be creating content, some days you'll be helping launch new projects, and some days you'll be handling whatever needs to get done to keep things moving forward.

This is the water series from last week’s HRC Finished test.

It was a long one—8–10 minutes per dog. Boss ran last.

Triple marks with a pretty tricky water blind at the end. The blind was up and over a little island just past that last bird, and dogs had to stay honest and carry a straight line without getting pulled back to the old fall. Quite a few struggled with it.

Boss handled it well and was a great team player.

I cut this down to just under 4 minutes by speeding up the swims.

Wish I could be at the AKC test today to film—Tyce is running a few young dogs. Anxious to hear how they do.

Tyce took Boss and Ticket to their first HRC hunt test today.

They just recently started holding tests here in Utah, so it was fun to finally get the opportunity to go run one. Tyce ran Ticket in Seasoned and Boss in Finished, and the three of them came away with two ribbons and a really good first experience running HRC.

I don’t often get to go watch during hunt tests with our young family, so it was extra special to have most of the kids there with us today. And it definitely confirmed that if we want any video of training or testing… I need to be the one there to get it.

These ribbons are just one small step toward titles, but they represent hundreds of hours of time spent training and working together.

Really fun day getting to watch Tyce do what he’s great at.
