"This was part of the addition to the town twenty years ago," Jennifer told me. "A farmer donated the field to help the town expand."
Part of that expansion included a community garden. At first, many residents took advantage of this resource, but for the past 10-15 years, it's been largely unused, and Jennifer's husband has been keeping the area mowed as a service to the community.
This year, they decided to try to bring it back to life.
After getting the green light from the city council this Spring, Jennifer bought some chicks which she's been raising in her garage/backyard. When a friend heard about her endeavors, she suggested that Jennifer apply for a grant from a local community foundation for a chicken tractor.
She got the grant, and this morning, I had the privilege of delivering a Egg Cart'n Homesteader to Jennifer (and her granddaughter, Kelly) in Marquette, KS.
Jennifer plans to use the chickens as part of her work with local families. She hosts events for children from town, giving them opportunities to experience the outdoors, get connected to nature and their food source, and engage in productive activities.
Jennifer's initiative has also sparked new interest in the land, and two of the community garden plots are in use again this year, one by a neighbor and one by a local church.
We're excited to partner with people like Jennifer who are making a real difference in their communities.
