We have multiple dogs living on the farm with very important jobs. This is Ellie, a 5 year old rough collie. Her job includes sleeping in front of the wood stove, being a tripping hazard by the front door, and receiving pets from anything with a pulse! The herding instincts missed this one, but at least she is sweet 🤣

Our newest rescue, Becky. Becky had a leg that was broken at the knee and she will need a splint for life. It has unfortunately started to heal and callous in pIace. I have commissioned a 3D printed leg splint for her so she can live a normal chicken life and set up an appointment to have the leg xrayed to track the health of the limb. Becky will likely always have to live indoors unless directly supervised so we have also ordered her chicken diapers. 🤣 welcome, Becky girl!

We will be welcoming these two sweet boys to the farm after Easter 🙂 ❤️

Most people know my name isn't Layla, or anything close to it. So, why would I name my homestead Layla's?

For those who don't know, this beautiful Doberman pictured below is Layla. She was the love of my life, my soul dog, and the reason I went into veterinary medicine. She passed away in January 2024. Layla LOVED other animals - any animal, especially kitties. My dream was to buy a farm for her so she could run free and spend time "mothering" the animals she cared for so deeply. Unfortunately, she was called to the rainbow bridge at the age of 6 from a heart condition, and I was never able to give this to her.

This dog changed SO MANY lives. Everyone loved her, and she served as an amazing companion to many people. I am honouring her incredible legacy by not only naming my passion project after her, but continuing to help animals in need by also opening the homestead to rescue animals of any species. I am not only committing to sustainable farming and agriculture, but to carry on Layla's immense love of life. My goal is to change as many lives as she did, even if that goal is a littttlleeeee far-fetched... :-)

If you've made it this far, thank you for reading her story and keeping her memory alive.
