A staple piece to the AE program has been Eclipse O Lena aka Sugar❣️ A little backstory on this producing broodmare starts when Abbie was just 14 years old. Sugar belonged to a friend of Abbie’s named Sarah Nance. Sugar helped Sarah to many wins, including national qualifications in the Breakaway Roping. After a successful high school rodeo career, Sugar became a full time heel horse for Sarah’s mom, Stacy. During that time, Sugar unfortunately sustained an injury that would put her out of competition for a couple of months. When this happened, Stacy found it in Sugar’s best interest to give her a few extra months off and let her carry her first foal, Al Sugared Up. This was Sugar’s first c**t who was by Metallic Al. He went on to be trained by Tavis Walters in the heeling and breakaway. Al Sugared Up was then sold to Jonathan Torres, who has done a phenomenal job proving the gelding and growing Sugar’s producer earnings.
Sugar came to the family in 2018. Stacy had called Abbie’s dad, Justin, mentioning she had this mare who had just come off an injury and having a baby but was ready to get back to competition. Sugar was 15 years old at the time. She really helped form Abbie’s sister, Liz, into the roper she is today. Sugar and Liz were a great team for about two years, until Sugar started to show her age and past injuries in her performance. Rather than taking the chance of hurting Sugar indefinitely, Liz and Justin decided it was best to retire her. That’s where Abbie comes into the picture. At this time, Stacy had been so generous in allowing Liz and Justin to use Sugar but she still belonged to Stacy. Abbie saw an opportunity to start her breeding program she always wanted. She made a phone call to Stacy asking to purchase Sugar, the rest is history.
Since purchasing Sugar in 2020, Sugar has had 3 foals, Catolena Winemixer (4 years old), Bugn Bad (3 years old), and Caddy Shack (yearling). Sugar was bred late one year and thus has to take a year off to get caught up. She’s coming 23 years old this new year, with hopes to have one final foal before retiring❤️
Her producer earnings are probably close to $100k, if not over. She was a phenomenal athlete and she’s an even better mama💕
