Yep, shelters are FULL. Spay and Neuter is the solution to the problem. Of course, SPAY/ABORT especially when the female is about to give birth is extra difficult on veterinarian's mental health but it IS one way to HELP the overpopulation of DOGS AND CATS. Of course NOT ALLOWING animals to get pregnant in the first place is a WIN WIN!
Spay abortion and reality:
Today I’m fixing a cat that another rescue refused to fix because she is pregnant. A feral cat.
Friday we rushed a kitten to the ER 2 days off the ground whose PCV values in her blood were 10%. 35% is normal. 20% is blood transfusion. 10% is bordering death. We humanely let her go.
Yesterday we picked up a kitten off the ground who was 6.7oz at 5-6w old and should have been easily 20oz. She’s in an incubator fighting for her life.
Theres countless babies on the ground right now and people begging for help. We are full. Rescues are full. Shelters are full.
I saw this comment on a TNR group post:
“Most people do not realize (or refuse to) that in a spay/abort the kittens are also under anesthesia and feel nothing as they are removed with the uterus. There is NO pain, NO distress and the mother cat does not even realize that there were ever kittens.
On the flip side, letting the kittens be born then euthanizing them IS painful from the injection alone and those are the luck ones. Kittens born outside are subject to temperature death (hot or cold), predation, starving, abuse from humans or a slow death from parasites.
Which one sounds kinder?” (And add to that intestinal Parasites causing diarrhea and dehydration and slow and agonizing deaths)
They’re suffering. They’re dying - slowly.
It hurts my heart to spay abort but it hurts me more to see the suffering all around.
People say “I got rid of them all to homes”… ok. But those homes could go to animals alive and struggling outside. And did you fix them first? Or did you give away free kittens that will likely grow up to make more free kittens.
This has to stop. Humanity has to do better. Fix your pets. Fix your strays/community cats/ferals (FREE).
There’s a saying… “if you’re not part of the solution, you are part of the problem..” Please be a part of the solution.
