Something was very wrong with Gretels belly. It could have been a birth defect as she did have an umbilical hernia that was repaired when she was fixed. Unfortunately, surgery was the only option and while we would love to do everything we can, we have to look at the reality that the funds that would go into *trying* to save this one kitten, would severely impact the work we do.
We TNR feral cats for $10 per cat. That’s spay/neuter and vaccines. If I spend $1000 (which we do not have as a rescue) then that’s 100 cats that could have been TNR’d. I get 120 appts a year - nearly an entire years worth of appointments could have been paid for with $1000 that’s obviously with no additional medical or medication needs but that’s a LOT of cats.
It’s the worst, harshest reality. Gretel was loved deeply by her foster family but she hadn’t been adopted. Applications are at an all time low, donations are nearly non existent, and it’s a real struggle to work in rescue.
A massive thank you to for being compassionate to a private rescue who is doing the best work we know how with the most limited of resources. I’ve never felt heard by an ER vet when it comes to rescue and it was such a relief and weight lifted to help do what was in the best interest of this sweet baby.
I also have to say thank you to her foster who came down to say goodbye. It was nice to not do it alone but boy was it emotional. You gave her the best life she could have had.
In honor of Gretel, we won’t stop. We will continue to TNR and will do our best to TNR over 100 ferals in the next year. 🐾🥹🥲
Now here is my plug. Please please please. Fix your pets. There too many unwanted animals suffering.
