Anishinaabe And Awesiinyag

Anishinaabe And Awesiinyag Dedicated to providing support for people and animals on the Mille Lacs Reservation Boozhoo! As a Band Member, I have been part of this community my whole life.

My name is Li Boyd, and this page is for my developing organization, Anishinaabe And Awesiinyag. This organization will be dedicated to helping the families and animals of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe reservation. I've loved animals my whole life too, and in the last five years, I have become more and more involved with issues of animal welfare. As Anishinaabe, though, I believe animal welfare ca

n't be separated from the welfare of the people and families in our community as well. We are all connected. In order to honor those connections, I've formed this organization, which is in the process of seeking legally recognized non-profit 501(c)(3) status. First and foremost, families in rural areas like this, especially where large portions of the population are considered to be near poverty, need tons of help accessing resources other communities might take for granted. Here, the most basic things such as quality pet food that isn't overpriced, veterinary services, and other pet care supplies are simply not within the reach of many community members. Anishinaabe And Awesiinyag will work to connect people and their animals with the things they need to be whole and healthy families. It's always my goal to keep pets and families together whenever possible by offering supplies, advice, and financial and transportation assistance for preventative and emergency veterinary care. Anishinaabe and Awesiinyag also addresses issues of animal overpopulation and neglect by working with trusted partners to rescue unclaimed strays and accept surrendered animals. This organization and myself will not judge anyone who has a crisis where they cannot care for an animal any longer. Our community deals with a lot of issues, and I want everyone to know they're not alone and there are people here to help an animal that's in need for any reason. This page will feature informational articles, reminders of community events surrounding animal welfare, lost and found animal postings, potential community surveys, and maybe even the occasional animal meme to get us all through our days. I'm always open to suggestions for topics and posts as well, so please don't hesitate to message me with suggestions or questions. Thank you, chi-miigwech, for visiting, and here's wishing health and happiness to everyone.

UPDATE: Uno's owner was found and brought him home.

Hey folks. If this is your boy, he's at the D1 Aquatic Center, trying to make new friends with the vet students and volunteers for tomorrow's clinic. We love him, but we can't let him in!

10/24/2024

Things have been extremely hard for me lately. I'm not giving up, but I do have to... try to take care of myself. I'm doing the best I can. And I've had to say "no" many more times than I'm comfortable with. I'm sorry for that. And I hope everyone understands, I'm just tapped out. I can't help anyone when I can barely take care of myself.

I don't want people to stop reaching out to me. I'll always do what I can to help. But please understand that I do not receive any form of compensation for what I do. The support I get, while amazing, is from organizations and people who are far away, inundated with their own struggles, and is directed toward a cause, not me as a person trying to survive. We are all just trying to keep our heads above water. I don't want to get into my personal woes too much, but health and financial issues are abundant along with some very difficult family losses, so...

Just please understand. Please. I'm trying. I need a break. I need help. I need healing. I'm here. I promise. Just please give me some grace and understanding.

URGENT:

Today we were at the vet with Gii (Little Boy). Gii got hurt really badly by jumping through a window! He's been in terrible pain. His chest wound caused blood and infection to fill his belly, and it hurt so bad that he couldn't even lie down. Overnight, we watched Gii stand for over 12 hours, exhausted and needing relief.

This morning, Gii got the critical care he needed, including wound closure and fluid drainage. Gii's owner Joe took him home after, telling Gii all about how babied he's going to be over the next few days. Gii will also get rechecked in exactly a week, to make sure the wound is healing correctly.

Gii's care was provided by Garrison Animal Hospital, which was kind enough to give us a day to come up with $737 to cover emergency vet costs. If you're able to help out, please please please call Garrison Animal Hospital @ 320-692-4180, starting tomorrow morning, to put a little something on Gii and Joe's bill. Not only does this help Gii himself, but it helps Anishinaabe And Awesiinyag to continue to have funds available to help animals in need in the future. Thank you, everyone!

ANNOUNCEMENT:

There are upcoming spay/neuter and wellness clinics for Mille Lacs Band community members in the urban area and District 1. The dates are as follows.

Sept 29 - D1 SPECIAL one day surgery. The sign up list for this clinic is OPEN. Animals who get on the list will receive spay or neuter surgery and vaccinations. Please call the D1 Aquatic Center at 320-532-7733 NOW to reserve a surgery spot!

Oct 25 - Urban Wellness and Surgery Clinic at All Nation's Church. Wellness is first come, first served, and begins at 9am. The surgery list for this clinic is not open yet.

Nov 9 and 10 - D1 Wellness and Surgery Clinic. Wellness is first come, first served and begins at 9am daily. The surgery list for this clinic is not yet open. Expect an announcement in early October.

I will do my best to update when these surgery lists open, as they typically fill up quickly. These clinics are made possible entirely through the volunteer efforts of MNSNAP, The Bond Between, and the University of Minnesota SIRVS (Student Initiative for Reservation Veterinary Services) organization. These services are provided to our community for FREE by organizations dedicated to helping indigenous communities as much as they can. Remember to give them a big miigwech, and also remember that none of these volunteers receive compensation from the Mille Lacs Band or anyone else. These organizations work hard to find ways to bring all the physical resources, medications, and supplies to our communities at no cost to us. It takes incredible dedication and effort, amounting to tens of thousands of dollars for each clinic, and we get it all for FREE. Thank them, hug them, treat them well, because they all do this work out of love, and they are some of my best friends in the world.

Miigwech!

Fox is out of the hospital, a leg lighter, and feeling good about life! Thank you to everyone for wishing him well, donating, and supporting both him and us as we took this roller coaster ride together!

I received Fox last Saturday after the network of amazing partners who work on tribal animal welfare issues asked me if I could help. Fox suffered a life-threatening injury to his leg, and we needed to all pull together to get him through to emergency veterinary care.

Thankfully Fox made it through the weekend and underwent successful life saving surgery today! We're going to continue to look after Fox, and this sweet, well-behaved boy will be seeking a forever home soon.

Due to the emergency nature of Fox's injuries, his vet expenses are quite high, and if anyone can help out, the link below will allow you to make a tax deductible donation through our partner Four Winds Connections. Immense gratitude goes out to everyone, including Raye Taylor, Rick Haaland, Carrie Openshaw, Julia Godfrey, Marilou Chanrasmi, Kathleen Kleckler, and everyone else who has supported this! Thank you all so much!

Four Winds Connections got a call from a tribal partner Rick Haaland about a dog in Leech Lake who had his leg caught in a cable (for a while) and as a result needed an amputation. The partner in Leech Lake transferred the dog, now named Fox, to the care of our good friend and tribal partner, Li Boy...

Just a reminder. The stray hold on these two will end on Monday 8/19, and they will thereafter be transferred to whatever organization can provide rehoming. Take another look and pass their pics around one more time, fam.

This pair was found in Hinckley. The big guy was wearing a chain collar. They are currently sheltered and safe. Big guy needs some non-emergency vetting that we'll be looking into asap.

He and the gangly little dobie pup are best buds and are most relaxed together, so they've been sharing a kennel and eating up a storm! This evening was all about toys, pets, treats, and even some zoomies!

This pair is really wondering what happened to their family, so please share their pics. Thanks!

UPDATE: This good boy was claimed by his owner. He has been returned! 👍

Hey all. If this is your boy, he was picked up by a concerned citizen on Hwy 169 near the Mille Lacs Indian Museum Trading Post. He was with two females who skedaddled, and all three are wearing collars. If these are your kids, please contact Mille Lacs Tribal Police dispatch at 320-532-3430. There have been reports of these dogs hanging around at the ALU, and we'd like to make sure they're safe.

For now, this boy is staying with Anishinaabe And Awesiinyag, and he's technically on a 10-day stray hold. If he's not claimed within 10 days, he will be rehomed at the earliest possible convenience. He's a friendly dude, and he's missing his fam, so please reach out! Miigwech everyone! Spread the word!
