The American Federation of Aviculture is deeply concerned by the ongoing Spix’s Macaw conservation crisis in Brazil.
The Spix’s Macaw is one of the most important examples of how dedicated aviculture, science-based breeding, and international cooperation can help bring a species back from the edge of extinction.
AFA supports every reasonable effort to protect the remaining Spix’s Macaws, including transparent testing, independent veterinary review, strict biosecurity, and humane, science-based management decisions.
We oppose the unnecessary destruction of any individual bird in this critically important conservation population and urge all parties to place the survival of the species above politics, personal disputes, or institutional conflict.
Responsible aviculture is not the enemy of conservation. In the case of the Spix’s Macaw, aviculture has been essential to the species’ survival.
AFA is sharing this petition as part of a broader call for transparency, independent veterinary review, and the protection of every remaining Spix’s Macaw. We encourage members to review the available information carefully and support science-based, humane conservation decisions.
