Search success is not defined by completing every hide, but by Sweet Tooth’s ability to remain clear, confident, and engaged throughout the work.
In this session, Sweet Tooth continued to work odor thoughtfully and make appropriate decisions as the search progressed. As we moved through the environment, I could see his search stamina beginning to decrease. An expected and normal part of sustained cognitive work.
He was able to locate one final hide before we concluded the session.
A key part of effective handling is recognizing when a dog is approaching their threshold and making the decision to end while they are still successful. This preserves clarity, supports confidence, and helps maintain long-term enthusiasm for the work.
The goal is not to extend the search at all costs, but to ensure the dog leaves the session with a positive, sustainable experience that supports future learning.
