Search success is not defined by completing every hide, but by Sweet Tooth’s ability to remain clear, confident, and engaged throughout the work.
In this session, Sweet Tooth continued to work odor thoughtfully and make appropriate decisions as the search progressed. As we moved through the environment, I could see his search stamina beginning to decrease. An expected and normal part of sustained cognitive work.
He was able to locate one final hide before we concluded the session.
A key part of effective handling is recognizing when a dog is approaching their threshold and making the decision to end while they are still successful. This preserves clarity, supports confidence, and helps maintain long-term enthusiasm for the work.
The goal is not to extend the search at all costs, but to ensure the dog leaves the session with a positive, sustainable experience that supports future learning.

Why is nose work so powerful for environmentally sensitive dogs?
Many sensitive dogs move through the world constantly scanning for potential concerns. New objects, unfamiliar sounds, unexpected movement, novel environments—everything requires processing.
Nose work can help shift that experience.
When a dog is searching, they're no longer focused on monitoring every detail around them. Instead, they're using their most powerful sense to gather information, solve problems, and interact with their environment in a way that feels natural and rewarding.
Research has found that dogs who participate in nose work may show more optimistic responses to uncertainty, suggesting that searching can positively influence emotional state and overall welfare.
For sensitive dogs, that matters.
Nose work encourages:
🐾 Curiosity instead of hypervigilance
🐾 Problem-solving instead of worry
🐾 Confidence through independent success
🐾 Agency and choice in the environment
🐾 Mental enrichment without social pressure
Perhaps most importantly, nose work doesn't ask dogs to ignore the environment. It allows them to investigate it.
Instead of:
➡️ Scanning → worrying → reacting
We often see:
➡️ Investigating → solving → succeeding
For many environmentally sensitive dogs, nose work is far more than a fun game. It's an opportunity to build confidence, resilience, and a more positive relationship with the world around them.
Have you noticed a change in your dog's confidence since starting scent work? I'd love to hear about it in the comments. 👇
