Why Do We Take Multiple Radiographic Views in Horses? 🐎

When diagnosing lameness, injury, or joint issues in horses, one X-ray typically isn't enough. Just like a photo only shows one angle, a single radiograph can miss critical details.

Below is an example of a lateral sesamoid fracture (white arrows in 3rd picture). Same horse, leg, and view, but a slightly different angle up to down. This minimal change in angle made the fracture much easier to see and characterize. There are some scenarios that things can be completely missed without sufficient views.

This is a case that had many overlapping clinical signs of an everyday abscess, but a prime example of the value of diagnostics.

Several other views were taken of this fracture with the same goals of all cases:
✔Improved accuracy. Multiple views help us pinpoint the location and nature of a problem.
✔Better treatment decisions. A clear, complete picture means more targeted care — getting your horse back to work or rest with confidence. Sometimes this mean enough views to discern the need for more detailed imaging such as CT or MRI.
✔ A confident diagnosis. We care about you and your horse, and want to make sure all of your efforts are being used wisely.

What Is Equine Shockwave Therapy – And How Can It Help Your Horse?

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive, advanced treatment used to promote healing in horses with musculoskeletal injuries. This technology uses focused, high-pressure acoustic shock waves that pe*****te deep into tissues, stimulating regeneration and reducing pain.

Common conditions treated include:
• Tendon and ligament injuries
• Back, neck, and sacroiliac pain
• Bone injuries
• Non-healing wounds

Benefits of Shockwave Therapy:
✔ Stimulates blood flow and cellular repair
✔ Reduces inflammation and discomfort
✔ Speeds up healing time
✔ Often used alongside other therapies for enhanced results (e.g. PRP)

In addition to its common uses, we have had great results with adding it to our treatment plan for slow healing wounds. Perfect for stubborn summer sores this time of year!

Suspect ulcers in a your equine athlete? Get a FREE Gastroscope Session!

Many performance horses suffer from gastric ulcers—often with subtle signs like:

🔸 Girthiness or discomfort
🔸 Declining performance or mood changes
🔸 Weight loss or picky eating
🔸 Dull coat or poor condition

A concrete diagnosis via gastroscopy is always best, but we know that cost rack up quick. We also know that in complicated cases treating with unknowns can become frustrating and expensive for the owner. We want you to be as confident in our treatment plan as we are. Which is why we’re offering 2 FREE gastroscope sessions to help evaluate ulcers and give your horse the care they need! We are pretty darn excited to have this equipment on hand, and ready to get your horses feeling their best💙🎉
