Do you know what these little things are? If not, give me your best guess! If you know, don't say. Instead tell me how you use them!

Most people hear "radish" and picture those little red balls that show up on salad bars.
This is a radish too.
A purple daikon radish from my garden.
For scale, that's my hand next to it.
Daikon radishes can easily grow well over a foot long, with some varieties reaching several pounds. Unlike the spicy little red radishes many of us grew up with, daikons are much milder. They have a crisp texture, a gentle peppery bite, and a slightly sweet flavor that gets even sweeter after a frost.
They're incredibly versatile in the kitchen. Slice them fresh into salads, add them to slaws, pickle them, roast them alongside potatoes and carrots, toss them into stir fries, or shred them into soups. Their mild flavor means they take on seasonings beautifully while still adding crunch and freshness.
In the garden, they're just as useful. Daikons are often used as a cover crop because their massive roots punch deep into the soil, helping break up compaction and improve water infiltration. They're basically nature's tiller.
This one was grown for eating, but every time I pull a daikon from the ground, I'm reminded that vegetables can be a lot more interesting than the grocery store version taught us to expect.
Have you ever grown or tried a daikon radish?

For years, Urban Prairie has grown one project at a time.
Microgreens. Workshops. Community food access. Plant sales. Consulting. Local food distribution.
The challenge has always been that people often don't know everything we do, where to find it, or how to access it.
So I built a new website.
The new Urban Prairie website brings everything together in one place. You can learn about our projects, shop online, and see what's happening without waiting and wondering if I'm buried in a greenhouse somewhere.
One of the biggest improvements is our new online ordering system.
Rather than maintaining store hours, we've gone to online ordering and created predictable weekly pickup windows.
Order Sunday through Wednesday → Pick up Thursday from 2-5 PM
Order Thursday → Pick up Friday from 2-7 PM
Order Friday → Pick up Saturday from 2-5 PM
This allows me to spend more time growing food and less time waiting in a storefront, while giving customers a simple and reliable way to access products.
Take a look around and let me know what you think.

This clip alone doesn't show much.

Just crops.

Rows of green plants filling the frame.

Often, as farmers, our summer Saturday nights are spent working. But, usually we make the best of it.

But if you listen, you can hear everything that matters.
Friends talking. Family laughing. Music playing somewhere in the background. The sounds of people sharing food and time together.

The camera catches a beautiful ag moment, but the soundtrack tells the story.

And honestly, that's exactly how I want my Saturday nights to look.

Good food. Good people. A little music. A garden growing.

Nothing fancy.

Just a life that feels full.

We are at today!
And next week!

The Urban Prairie Agriculture CSA is more than a produce subscription. It's an investment in local food, local farmers, and a stronger community food system.
Each week, members receive a seasonal selection of fresh produce grown by Northern Utah farmers. Depending on the season, shares may include salad greens, microgreens, herbs, vegetables, fruits, and specialty crops harvested at peak freshness. Most items travel only a few miles from the field to your table, helping you enjoy food that lasts longer, tastes better, and supports the people growing it.
When you join our CSA, you're helping build a food system that keeps dollars in our local economy, creates opportunities for small farms, and increases access to fresh food throughout our community.
Food shouldn't have to travel across the country to reach your plate. Join us this season and experience what truly local food can be.
