This is an incident that occurred late last night on 139.
Hi community of Rangely! I am not from here but joined so that I could share what happened to us last night around midnight. My husband and I were heading home to Grand Junction from Idaho with our 4 kids and there was an accident on US-6 in Utah that closed the entire road for hours so we ended up taking a detour which took us through your town for the first time! I am not 100% certain on exact timing or exactly how far we were outside of the town of Rangely but I do know that I passed a sign that said "Waving hands Interpretive site." I was driving and the rest of my family was asleep. All of the sudden when I came around a curve there was a car stopped (in the middle of the road) in the other lane flashing their brights at me off and on off and on (they did not stop flashing me until I came to a complete stop next to them) I thought maybe they were warning me their was animals crossing or something so I immediately slowed way down but already had this creepy gut feeling that something wasn't right. I started yelling for my husband to wake up as I was getting closer to approaching them. My husband woke up and through the dark and us being blinded by their bright lights we could make out there was people standing outside their car. My husband told me to stop next to them and just roll my window down a tiny bit to ask them what they need. As soon as I was stopped next to them and my husband yelled out "Do you need something?" the male closest to our truck was starting to say something along the lines of "do you happen to have" but as he is asking this there is 3 other males that all started walking toward my truck. These men were all placed perfectly around their car. One at the front, one at the trunk, one at the driver side and one at the passenger side. I knew that something was up and immediately hit my gas hard and pulled out of there and IMMEDIATELY after I did so they all jumped back in their car and started driving (back towards Rangely). It was then that I knew for sure that they were not broke down. I had no service out there for a long ways but about 15 minutes later I was finally able to get my phone to make a call to emergency services because I was terrified of somebody else falling for it and getting hurt. I passed a white SUV shortly after and all I could think about was how bad I wish I could somehow warn them (without also trying to stop them and freaking them out) and how much I hope its not a woman with children in their too. All of the men looked to be Hispanic but it was dark and they were all wearing white button up shirts, my husband thought they were all wearing high vis because that's how bright their shirts stood out and he had just woke up. I just really thought it was important to share with the community in case their are women or teenagers that drive this road alone at night. I would hate to see anybody get hurt. I don't know what their intentions were but I don't think they were good. Stay safe everyone!
