SAY HELLO TO UNO!
This precious little 3-day old baby came to me on Tuesday with two of his siblings in an extremely bad and horribly sick state.
Unfortunately the tiniest “runt” that I may have ever seen was already in mid-crash by the time I received them and passed away quickly despite all of my fast-acting attempts to bring her back around.
The second little one looked identical to Uno but came to me with half of his back leg missing, half of the leg bone exposed, and swollen with a wicked infection. He seemed to already been in sepsis and despite hours of intensive care and medication his tiny body just couldn’t pull through.
THEN there is this precious little one that I’m calling UNO because he is missing most of the toes on his back foot. Thankfully besides his wound he is pretty healthy and eating his bottles like a champion!
This photo is from when I took him into the vet (always 100000 thank you’s for the expedited and wholesome care at Fix West Texas). I was worried this little guy had a bad infection with the black colored flesh spreading up his foot. But thankfully the vet checked him over and really thinks that it’s only the surface flesh that has died off and expects him to heal and make a full recovery and just have an adorable paw with (2?) toes. Got him a medical grade wash to keep his tootsies clean and an antibiotic ointment. And I’m happy to say that even just 24 hours later his wound is looking so much better!
I’ll never know exactly what happened to these babies. My first guess is that they may have been born with a wrapped umbilical cord or amniotic band issue. But it also kind of looks like they were chewed on a little, most likely by momma, especially considering the fresh look of the wounds and the obvious infection. I’ve heard of this happening before especially in inexperienced momma cats. When kittens are born momma chews off the umbilical cord and it’s possible there was confusion or something else.
Unfortunately momma cat was feral, very sickly and was not caring for her babies. There were 3 more siblings that died prior to them coming to me. Thankfully I’ve reached out to Gabby at Alley Cats Rescue and she is going to try to help with TNR for momma kitty.
So keep this precious little one in your thoughts and if you would like to consider contributing towards his care and vet bills and medications, I would be so appreciative! I have several ways you can help that I will share below. 🖤🐾
