Leading the charge since Spring 2009, I had advocated for a dog park in Oakland, NJ. The idea of a dog park started after we got our dog, Scooby. Our family learned that not only walks but running around and socializing were good for a dog's health and well-being. Looking for dog parks, we found a few but with varying conditions. Beautiful dog parks like the one in Ridgewood and at Brookdale Park
are much needed, while others like Hawthorne and Pequannock could use some work. Originally, I thought that the Raymond property would be the best spot but with plans in the works for a nature trail at that location, the Heritage Hills property (commonly called Pleasureland) was the next best bet. I believed that with a little pressure from citizens, a good plan, and money through citizen donations and business and corporate sponsors; Oakland could have its own dog park that Oaklanders and residents from other towns will use helping the town as a whole. The project took a different turn, however, when my mom, Jill, the person who gave me inspiration to try and build the park, passed away in August 2012 due to cancer. Major progress occurred starting in 2015 as the concept of a dog park was been added to a plan for a new park, Great Oak Park, which was proposed on the Pleasureland/Muller's Park property near the Shoprite. After public meetings occurred that gathered public input, a park committee was formed to investigate what would be allowed on the property. I received Park Committee approval in May 2016 and received Borough approval in early 2020 to begin construction. The dog park opened to the public during a ribbon cutting ceremony on May 8, 2021, over Mother's Day weekend.
