A common reason we see pets at the OVC is for accidental ingestion of rat poison. If owners know that their pet has recently eaten the product, we induce vomiting and/or administer activated charcoal. Activated charcoal absorbs the contents of the stomach and intestines and prevents the poison from being absorbed on its way through the digestive tract. We also see pets that have become sick after ingesting rat poison.
There are TWO min classes of rat poison: Bromethalin-based (Tomcat, Take Down, Top Gun) and Warfarin-based (D-Con, Jaguar, Ramik). Bromethalin products are neurotoxic and cause tremors, seizures, and death within 1-2 days of ingestion; there is no antidote. Warfarin-based products inhibit Vitamin-K and the ability to form clots; dogs become anemic and weak several days after ingesting this poison; the antidote is hospitalization, Vitamin K, and IV fluids.

HOT diggity dog!!! It is warm!! Heat stress can be a real danger on days when temperatures reach 90+ degrees. It is absolutely important to make sure your pet has access to clean water at all times and access to shade. If your pet becomes excessively lethargic, begins vomiting, loses coordination, or becomes unconscious move them to a cool place ASAP. Place ice or ice packs in a thin towel and place on the skin of the abdomen. If possible run cool water over the skin as well and offer cool water to drink. Heat stroke is an emergency and veterinary care should be sought immediately!!

Prevention of these parasites is much more cost effective than the treatment. Pregnant cats and dogs should be dewormed in late pregnancy to reduce the chance for infection of newborn pets. All puppies should be dewormed by 2-3 weeks of age and repeated every 2-3 weeks for 3-4 times. Prompt deworming (Virbantel) should be given when any parasites are detected. We recommend yearly deworming for your pet, or twice a year (spring & fall) if you have a pet that is heavily outdoors. Prompt disposal of all pet f***s is essential- especially in yards, playgrounds, and public parks.

There are many different types of parasites, the type of parasite must be determined to come up with a treatment plan. The roundworm is acquired either through the placenta or from the mothers’ milk in puppies and kittens. Roundworms can also be transmitted through infected f***s or contaminated surfaces (usually soil or dirt) or by eating an intermediate host (mice/rats). Hookworms can be transmitted through the mother’s milk, but also through skin contact or ingestion of contaminated soil. Whipworms are obtained through soil contaminated by f***s. The tapeworm is acquired through the ingestion of an intermediate host such as a flea or mouse.

Our special for the month of August is a 10% discount on all small animal deworming products! Most intestinal parasites can be detected with a microscope on a f***l exam. Specifically, we are looking for the shed eggs of the parasites. These eggs are unique to which type of parasite we are dealing with to help diagnose and treat accordingly. Due to some parasites intermittent shedding of eggs, a f***l exam may not indicate parasites even when they are present. Therefore, a good history of clinical symptoms and past deworming is important.
