Leveled up!

There is nothing quite as satisfying as feeding a pint of slugs that ate all my green beans and melons to 18 ducklings. There is an apocalyptic amount of slugs in my garden. I thought it was the flea beetles till I went out this evening and EVERYTHING was covered in slugs. Jerks.

Another mind blowing comparison between goat milk and sheep milk. Since sheep milk has a the highest fat content of all milks it makes much more curd to whey. This same ricotta bowl I use for draining was hardly ever half full of curd when I made the same cheese with goat milk. I had to fight to fit it all in!

New cultures, New rennet and one gallon of set curd! My first successful gallon batch of brebis! (The equivalent of chevere) My first attempt failed due to old cultures... but look at this! It's solid from top to bottom. There is hardly any whey!!! Sheep cheese is such a dream. Can't wait to see what it's like after draining.

Everything seems to a faired okay. We had a quarter inch of ice in every bucket this morning. Leaves were crispy and icy everywhere but mostly the important things made it. Had an unexpected beebalm casualty but I'll take it. Blueberries should be okay? They flowers were kind of transparent this morning but are now full and white and not falling off. I think we dodged a bullet! Also in the good news department I got a full quart of milk from F***y this morning! So not only did she come through bloat but she's back to her normal milk supply after almost drying off. Hallelujah.

I'm having a hard time coping with this freeze tonight. My entire row of blueberries bloomed today. Also my strawberries bloomed.. Apple bloosems... I covered all my cauliflower, broccoli, onions, and cabbage but the winds ripping so hard and the blueberries are so tall it was parachuting them and causing more damage.. I already lost all my peaches and pears due to the 80 degree week in March which forced them to bud out and die when the temperature dropped. The entire greenhouse had to.be emptied into the house. So frustrated. Praying hard.

Our dairy sheep F***y pulled through bloat which is a blessing. I was concerned she lost her milk after not eating for several days and not having much of a supply. I left her lamb with her while she recovered so she could keep gathering milk for me. Today she produced half a quart of milk and she has not started eating grain again. Grain= milk. I'm hopeful we will be back in milk business soon.

We will not be attending the Foothills Farmers Market this Saturday. I've been consumed with our dairy sheep who has a serious case of bloat and my flour order has not been delivered yet. We plan on being there for the rest of all the markets going forward. Enjoy your weekend!

*Insert happy dance here* Deliouis SHEEP YOUGURT! I did it! Sheep milk has the highest milk fat content compared to cow and goat. It makes a really thick yogurt almost like Greek but with out straining. It makes more cheese to whey as well so I'm looking forward to that! As long as you rapid cool it on ice after milking it has no sheepy flavor. Milking is still really challenging she spilled three buckets so far this week but after I collect milk for a few more days I'm going to make yogurt cream cheese which is basically super strained yogurt that is pressed into a block. Stay turned for that adventure.

This has been a long time coming. After not getting bred last year and successfully birthing artic blast, waiting 8+ weeks, and then many spilled buckets on the milk stand, while learning to milk with a broken numb finger, we finally have a quart of milk! We are currently milk sharing till I figure out what to do with her baby then we should be getting about a half gallon of milk a day. East frasians produce less as first time moms next year we should expect to get about a gallon of milk a day. I see sheep yogurt in my future.
