Who’s gonna tell her she’s here for a dental procedure? 😅

This sweet little 8mo frenchie had a malocclusion class 3 - as can be seen regularly in this breed. These occlusions are where the lower jaw (mandible) is longer than the top jaw (maxilla) this is what gives frenchies, English bulldogs, boxers, etc. the look of their bottom teeth sticking out.

Unfortunately for her, she had traumatic contact, and a deciduous canine still hanging around.

We got her all fixed up, and prescribed her lots of cuddles.

Can you tell she was the star of the show for the day? 😂

Periodontal or dental disease, affects much more than just the tooth. Periodontal disease is caused by plaque. Plaque, which is mostly bacteria, forms on the tooth surface and below the gum line. The plaque calcifies into tartar and results in inflammation of the gums. If left untreated the supportive bone under the gum begins to resorb and loss of bone can lead to gum recession, and destruction of the surrounding supportive tissue.

As periodontal disease progresses, bacteria grow and begin to enter the surrounding tissue. If left untreated the infection results in discharge of debris, bacteria and toxins into the blood stream, which can affect the liver, heart, lungs and kidneys.

Daily dental home care and regular professional cleaning can help to reduce the risk of severe periodontal disease.

🚨WEBINAR ALERT🚨

Please join us this Wednesday for a webinar with Clinician's Brief for: More Than a Cleaning: Elevating Dental Care & Patient Outcomes presented by Dr. Jennifer Mathis, CVPP, DAVDC!

Description:
This interactive one-hour webinar reframes the concept of a “routine dental cleaning” as a vital medical procedure that directly improves patient health, comfort, and longevity. Participants will review the incidence and hidden nature of periodontal disease, the anatomy of the gingival
sulcus, and the clinical difference between pocket depth and attachment loss. The session will cover the radiographic assessment of periodontal staging and treatment planning—including closed versus open root planing and the proper use of hand and ultrasonic instruments. An overview of anesthesia considerations and tooth-preserving, healing-focused therapies will reinforce how every team member can meaningfully contribute to patient outcomes, client trust, and overall practice success.

Coco and her crooked teeth! 😬

This sweet greyhound had a malocclusion causing traumatic palatal contact, with 304 contacting lingual 204. Unfortunately for her, 204 lost the battle to disease due to years of contact, and it wasn’t able to be saved even with the use of grafts.

As you can see, all of her 5s are even with one another in the images… her canines were everywhere!

We performed Vital Pulp Therapy on the lower canine to preserve as much jaw structure as we could. It kinda looks like an incisor now 😳

As you can see, she woke up feeling pretty good 🤪😍

Why broken deciduous canines need to be addressed: A story of many possible outcomes

Many might think it's just a baby tooth, so no need to worry because it'll fall out, right? Not so much!

In this case, we see a 5mo Aussie X who excitedly jumped on her owner, and snagged on his pants breaking her baby canine.

He had it immediately addressed (👏👏) with his regular veterinarian, who extracted the baby canine. As the adult erupted, they discovered something wasn't quite right.

Back to his veterinarian he went, and a referral was sent to their local dentist. That's where we come in!

CBCT imaging showed the canine (104) malformed from the trauma of breaking the deciduous canine. It had nearly a 90 degree bend. The premolar (105) was extracted; due to the canine malformation, it would have impeded eruption. Space was surgically created for 104 to erupt fully, and a restoration placed on the exposed dentin.

A few weeks from now we will check eruption and see if orthodontic intervention is needed. Cute pic of baby puppy for tax!
