Meet Ember 🧡

Ember is a beautiful 1-year-old kitty looking for a family who will never leave her behind again.

After being abandoned by her owners and left with a pet sitter for three months, Ember has every reason to be unsure of the world. Despite that, she has proven to be a very sweet little girl.

Within just a couple of hours of arriving at her foster home, she was already asking for pets and soaking up all the attention she could get. She’s an absolute love bug who adores being close to her people.

Ember is still building confidence around dogs and other cats. She happily sleeps in bed with them, but can get a little nervous if they get too much in her personal space. With slow introductions and a little patience, she’s continuing to blossom every day.

One of Ember’s favorite hobbies? Making biscuits! 🥹 She is a professional kneader… although her favorite kneading surface seems to be bare skin, so be prepared for lots of love (and maybe a few tiny claws!).

It has been 29 days since our last adoption.

If we’re being honest, this has been one of the hardest months we’ve had since last October.

This month we said goodbye to Yetta who was deeply loved after making the heartbreaking decision for behavioral euthanasia. Bear came into our hospice program and left us much sooner than any of us expected. One of the sweetest girls we’ve ever had was returned after a three-week foster-to-adopt, and we’re currently working through another difficult behavioral case.

Right now we have 18 animals in our care who have been waiting anywhere from 1 month to 5 months for their forever homes.

🐾 2 pairs of the sweetest bonded cats you’ll ever meet
🐾 5 scaredy cats (we completely understand why they’re taking longer)
🐾 1 young female kitty
🐾 1, older Anatolian Shepherd mix
🐾 And Rocky

While 18 is better than the 27 animals we had just a month ago, we’ve reached a standstill on intake. Until we can find homes for some of these amazing animals, we simply don’t have the space to bring in the next ones waiting for help.

We’ve actually received quite a few applications this month and had 5 or 6 meet and greets, but every one of them has ended with the family not being the right fit or not meeting our adoption standards.

Meet Lecture, our not-so-scaredy kitty! 🖤

Lecture came to us 71 days ago as one of our scaredy cats with little to no progress. For almost an entire month, he lived tucked away inside a bathroom vanity drawer, too frightened to believe people could be safe.

Thankfully, one of our amazing board members was able to move Lecture and a few of his fellow scaredy cats into a quiet spare bedroom where they could decompress. And something incredible happened…

Lecture became the first of the three to come out of his shell! ❤️

He now comes out for treats, asks for pets, and has even started purring!!!

Lecture is still looking for a very special family who understands that trust takes time. He’ll need a patient home willing to let him settle in at his own pace, but once he feels safe, he’s already proving that there’s a sweet, affectionate boy waiting to shine.

We hope this big breakthrough is the one that helps his perfect family find him. 🐾

Rocky is back with us. 💔

Rocky went to a foster-to-adopt home, but after just two days it was decided he wasn’t the right fit. While we’re sad it didn’t work out, we’re grateful the family was honest and returned him so we can find the home that truly matches his needs.

Rocky is around 1 year old and appears to be a Lab mix (possibly with some Pit Bull mixed in). He’s not a bad dog! He’s just an intense young dog who thrives when he has an active lifestyle and a job to do.

Rocky is great with cats, dogs, and kids, rides wonderfully in the car, and is always ready for the next adventure. Whether it’s hiking, running, dock diving, scent work, or just being your constant sidekick, Rocky is happiest when he’s mentally and physically engaged.

Yesterday, Rocky had a day train with Tipsy Tails Training, and we already saw huge progress with his kennel training. Like many smart, energetic dogs, Rocky can be a little pushy. This weekend we’re focusing on teaching him that calm behavior earns rewards (not demanding them). He’s catching on quickly and is very food motivated.

The reality is that Rocky has experienced a lot of abandonment in his short life. Which means he’ll need someone willing to be patient, consistent, and committed while he learns that he’s finally home for good.

If you’re looking for a couch potato, Rocky probably isn’t your guy. But if you’re looking for an adventure partner, a sport prospect, or a loyal best friend who will give you 110% every single day, Rocky just might be your perfect match.

Yesterday we took the time to really sit with the decision about Bear.

Could more medication have helped? Yes, but only temporarily, and It wouldn’t have changed the reality that his mobility was rapidly declining. We promised Bear that when he was really struggling we would choose comfort over prolonging his suffering.

Last night we held a little end-of-life party with some of our fosters and board members. 🎉

Bear got all the love, treats, belly rubs, and attention he could possibly handle. Being surrounded by people who deeply loved him felt like the ending he deserved.

Late last night, after everyone had gone home and my house had settled down, I called Bear inside from his favorite sunny spot on the deck. He tried over and over to stand, but his back legs just wouldn’t cooperate anymore. When I tried to help him, he became nippy. Not in a mean way, but because he was hurting. That was the moment I knew it was time. I wasn’t ready, but Bear was telling me he was.

This morning only confirmed it. He didn’t get up to greet me the way he had every morning and nap before.

We called the vet and spent the morning pouring love into him. He got THREE cheese burgers, the biggest pupcup you’ve ever seen from Polar Espresso. We had one final adventure before we brought him in. He passed at 11:30 this morning🤍

To everyone who followed Bear’s journey, sent kind words, donated to his care, or simply loved him from afar, thank you. You helped give him a week that was filled with more adventures, comfort, and affection than he had likely known in the years before.

We’ll probably be a little quieter online while we process losing both Yetta and Bear this last week. We still have many animals in our care who need homes, so you’ll likely still see us sharing them in our stories, but we’re going to take this week one day at a time as we heal.

Late night, but an important Bear update. ❤️

Bear has been doing amazing these last couple of days. He’s gone on a nice long (ish) walk, explored every inch of our almost two acre property, had his very first bath, spent his first night inside, gotten his first real bed and toys, and today we took him to a little pond where he got to meet some supporters and enjoy a peaceful walk by the water.

Unfortunately, after we got home, Bear took a pretty hard fall getting out of the truck.

Despite the weakness in his hind legs, Bear has always tried to move at 100%. He has never let his body slow him down or shown us that his legs were bothering him. Today when we got home he suddenly jumped out of the truck before both my feet were even on the ground. I somewhat caught him halfway to slow his fall, but he still landed hard on his side.

Since then, his mobility has declined significantly. His hind legs are now dragging, and he’s having to pull himself up with his front legs before sitting back on his hind end just to ask for pets. It has been heartbreaking to watch such a proud, determined dog suddenly struggle this much.

Our plan is to get Bear to the vet tomorrow and see if we can better manage his pain and keep him comfortable. We’re hoping this is something we can help him recover from, but we also know we have to be realistic. Bear came into our hospice program because we knew our time together would be limited, and tonight it feels like that time may be much shorter than we had hoped.

For now, we’re soaking up every cuddle, and moment we have left with him. Please keep Bear in your thoughts tomorrow. More than anything, we want to make sure every decision we make is centered around his comfort.

Officially Welcome Bear 🐻‍❄️🐾

Bear is a 15-year-old husky who has spent his entire life on a chain. When we saw a plea for a rescue willing to take in a senior hospice dog, we knew we couldn’t say no.

Bear made the long journey from Togiak, Alaska, flying to Anchorage and being housed by his incredible foster while we secured a drive up to Fairbanks. It truly took a village to get this sweet old man here, and we are so grateful to everyone who made it possible🫶🏻

Bear has severe weakness in his hind legs and significant knuckling in his back feet. Pain medication has helped improve his comfort and given him a little more mobility, but it hasn’t changed the reality that his body is beginning to fail him.

This week we’re going to give Bear as many of the experiences every dog deserves as we can, while making sure he stays comfortable and not pushing him beyond what his body can safety handle.
