American Dog Obedience Center

American Dog Obedience Center A premier boarding school for busy families, serving Oklahoma City metro area - and beyond. Results matter here! We train your dog for you.

We teach family dogs the behaviors they need to live well with their humans. Then we empower families to effectively elicit those behaviors at home. Beyond training for family dogs, we train & compete (quite successfully!) in AKC agility and rally. Kris Butler is also a certified canine fitness trainer (CCFT) through University of Tennessee's veterinary programs and she is the author of "Therapy Dogs Today: Their Gifts, Our Obligation."

Our own Buzz competed in his very first dog show last weekend—and it was a big one!
The AKC Summer Classic in Oklahoma City is an epic event, and while we were confident our young dog had the skills to qualify in his AKC Rally classes, managing his rowdy enthusiasm in such a chaotic environment was the real question. For canine athletes, that can be the biggest challenge of all.
Buzz didn’t just survive—he thrived. He seemed to enjoy his time in the ring, stayed focused through all three classes, and strutted his way to an AKC Rally Novice title with three First Place finishes! Two of those performances earned impressive scores of 99 out of a possible 100 points.
We couldn’t be prouder! Thanks to Dennis for minding the store while Buzz and Kris slipped away each day. Way to go, Buzz!

This golden girl was just getting started when she attended training here during March. It is not our story to tell but, in addition to a much loved member of her amazing family, she is learning advanced skills through on-going private lessons to enable her to become a professional working partner as well. There’s a whole lot of creativity, collaboration, and commitment involved - and it’s an honor to be included.

And just like that….
Lab Gabby and Rebecca Hulsey rolled into Joplin Missouri - and rolled out with an AKC Advanced Fetch title and an AKC Canine Good Citizen title. No small feat. The Advanced Fetch title includes 2 single retrieves and a double retrieve. (Double = two bumpers thrown before the dog is sent to retrieve.) Dogs must be steady at the line and deliver to hand and they must run in a pre-determined order. Bumpers are thrown by another person out in the field behind selected blinds so that dog does not see the landing spot.
In contrast to that, the Canine Good Citizen test is indoors with emphasis on controlled interactive behaviors in a social setting.
What we tend to focus on are the actual events - but this teacher is in awe of their determination and hours and days of practice. Becky’s commitment has gotten this team where they are and we look forward to continuing their “journey” with them. Good good girl Gabby!

Meet Cash, a bright Doodle who trained with us this past March. Cash isn’t just any student; his family holds a place in our history. One of his owners actually trained here years ago as a child with her family’s doodle.
Seeing the next generation return to us with their own dogs is the highest compliment we could receive. It’s an honor to keep the tradition of "good boys" going. Shout out to Stella, still a beloved member of Cash’s extended family. Good girl!

Pretty Maddie is a graduate from our March class. She is even more beautiful when she runs - but that is hard to catch in a photo. Running freely more often will be one of the many gifts of Maddie’s training - for her and her family.
Our April classes are full but there are openings for May and early June. You might consider wrapping a course for your dog at American Dog Obedience Center’s country boarding school around your summer vacation plans. The gifts of training are meant for your dog too.

Lab Gabby and her human Rebecca Hulsey hosted Rave On’s retirement luncheon at Scratch Kitchen last month. The dogs enjoyed chicken “chips” with peanut butter dip - and we the people ate and celebrated pretty well too. 😊 It’s interesting, the places dogs have take this trainer and the exceptional relationships they have fostered. ❤️

Check out our handsome alum, Enzo!
Followers of our page know that when a referral leads to a new enrollment, we love to say "thank you" by giving back to the community. Because of a referral from Enzo’s family, a new student has joined us for a March enrollment.
Thanks to Enzo’s exemplary behavior out in public, another family saw the potential of our special brand of training and decided to give their dog the same head start.
In appreciation of Enzo’s family and the new student they sent our way, American Dog Obedience Center has made a donation to the Oklahoma Dental Foundation’s Mobile Smiles program.
We try to choose organizations that our referring families would find meaningful, and we hope Enzo’s extended family appreciates the service this program offers to provide dental care to those in need across our state. Good boy, Enzo!

Big weekend in Broken Arrow for Team Rave On! 🎉

Kris Butler and Border Collie Rave On earned the AKC’s highest Fetch title — the Retriever title - and we couldn’t be prouder.

Each Fetch Retriever test is no small feat. Dogs must complete two double retrieves and one triple retrieve, with each bumper thrown about 80 feet away by helpers standing behind solid blinds so the dog cannot see where the bumpers land. To make it even tougher, the bumpers must be retrieved in a specified order, demanding focus, memory, and teamwork. And they must do it twice.

Ordering the retrieves was initially Rave On’s biggest challenge, but with steady training and persistence, practice truly made perfect. Watching it all come together in competition was incredibly exciting.

And the celebration didn’t stop there — student dog Gabby and her handler Becky also had a fantastic weekend, showing just how powerful consistent training and teamwork can be. We’ll post a video of one of their Advanced level tests in the comments below. That test requires 2 single retrieves and two double retrieves at 70 feet. Note that the dogs are steady at the line and deliver to hand.

Huge congratulations to all teams who continue to push their limits and prove what great training partnerships can achieve. See the clip in comments.
