I don’t think I’m the only one. After walking into your coop to see, well, death, it’s triggering to see a group of your girls laying out on the coop floor. Deep breath.

When adding your pullets to your existing flock, try the “LOOK BUT NOT TOUCH” method.

🤠 Put your pullets in a pen or cage INSIDE your big coop for 10-14 days.

🤠 This allows your original girls to get used to the newcomers from a safe point of view. There’s a hierarchy that exists in your coop and it takes time for your girls to figure it out.

🤠 After 10-14 days release your pullets. You can release them at night. You can release them during the day and spread treats around your coop floor as a distraction. I’ve done it both ways and both methods work.

🤠 Expect some pecking. Intervene when blood is drawn. Remember chickens are highly attracted to blood and the pecking can prove to be fatal.

🤠 Observe the transition to make sure everyone is safe. You will see who is at the top, who your Queen Hen is as you observe. Make sure they find the food and water source.

🤠 Enjoy your hard work from hatching to adding your pullets to your flock.

Much Needed Coop Refresh 💦💦💦

When was the last time you did something for the first time? 🙋🏻‍♀️ I’ll go first. Raising and harvesting meat birds is now something I can say I’ve done.

Today was one of the most emotional days here at The Chick Inn. My husband has been processing birds since he was a little boy. For him, it was familiar. For me, it was something my heart had to wrestle with.

The hardest part wasn’t the processing itself. Which my husband did so easily. It was catching each bird and placing them in the cone. They trusted me, and I felt the weight of that responsibility.

These birds were raised with one purpose to nourish our family. We gave them a good life, and today they fulfilled the purpose they were bred for. That doesn’t make it easy, but it does make me grateful.

A huge thank you to 𝕊𝕥𝕖𝕥𝕤𝕠𝕟 𝔽𝕒𝕣𝕞𝕤 for letting us borrow their plucker. And thank you to North Lake Outdoors for the cutting board that is light and easy to maneuver.

I’m honestly not sure if I’ll raise meat birds again. Time will tell. I’m thankful for the food they’ll provide, for the lessons they taught me, and for a husband who patiently walked beside me through every emotion.

Homesteading is beautiful, but it also asks us to hold gratitude and grief in the same hands.

I haven’t made up my mind if I’ll raise meat birds again.
