We see these temperaments start to reveal themselves early, even in the whelping box. The pup who settles first in your lap. The one who wiggles toward the door before their eyes fully open. Those little tendencies grow into the dog your family will know for years.

Some puppies shadow your every step. Others wander off to investigate the far corner of the room, tail wagging, perfectly content on their own.

Neither is better. Both are shaped, in large part, long before a puppy ever comes home.

The first eight weeks are when temperament begins to take root. Gentle handling, new textures and sounds, brief moments of mild challenge followed by comfort. This is where confidence is built in the independent explorer, and where the velcro puppy learns that closeness is safe and rewarding.

We raise every Ivory and Pine litter with this in mind. Structured socialization, thoughtful exposure, and steady human contact from day one, so each puppy grows into the fullest version of who they already are.

"Vet-checked" on a puppy listing sounds reassuring. And it is, as far as it goes.

A vet health check tells you a puppy is healthy today. Ears clear, heart sounds good, no signs of illness at pickup. That's meaningful, and it's the baseline every responsible breeder should meet.

Genetic and OFA testing is a different question entirely. Done on the parents before they are ever bred, it screens for heritable conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia, heart issues, and eye disease, along with DNA markers for conditions that can shape a dog's quality of life for years.

One tells you about this week. The other tells you about the next decade.

Both matter. But if you are researching breeders, it is worth asking to see the parents' OFA results and genetic panels, not just a vet's sign-off on the puppy. A good breeder will be glad you asked. 🤍

Today we’re introducing the litter to their first taste of puppy mush (a nourishing mix of puppy formula and softened kibble). It’s messy, it’s adorable, and it’s a huge step in their development as they transition away from mom. 🐶🍼
