New Legislation Alert: Strengthening Laws Against Animal Sexual Abuse
A continuing legal trend in 2024 was the expansion of laws prohibiting the sexual assault of animals. Over the past seven years, 18 states, plus D.C. and Guam, have strengthened or enacted new laws to address this issue.
๐ข Major Updates in 2024:
โ๏ธ Arizona now criminalizes the possession, distribution, and sale of recordings depicting sexual assault of an animal.
โ๏ธ Iowa significantly expanded its laws, adding clear definitions of prohibited conduct, including:
๐น Criminalizing the advertising, offering, or selling of an animal for the purpose of sexual abuse.
๐น Prohibiting animal sexual abuse on a personโs property.
๐น Banning the production and distribution of recordings of such acts.
๐ Remaining Gaps in the Law:
๐ธ West Virginia, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands still need laws to fully protect animals.
๐ธ 10 states, plus Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, rely on outdated or vague statutes, making enforcement difficult.
Stronger, clearly defined laws are critical for ensuring justice and preventing harm to animals. Continued advocacy is needed to close these remaining legal loopholes.
