I purchased my first Mini Schnauzer in 2005. Jenny was a pet quality, AKC registered, 8 month old, light salt & pepper female that was being sold because the owner decided to breed Cane Corso's instead. Jenny is living the good life with one of her grand daughters and a lovely family. In 2009, I decided I wanted a champion show dog and searched far and wide until I found Joan Huber at Blythewood K

ennel in eastern PA. I purchased Blythewood Gun For Hire in 2011 and Joan showed him to his championship for me. I am still learning how to groom and prepare a show dog but hope to be showing some of Gunner's children in the ring within the next couple of years. As a child, I grew up on a farm and raised rabbits, pigs, goats and bottle calves. I attended Hocking College and received an Associates Degree in Recreation and Wildlife with a major in Horsemanship. I then went on to breed, raise and train horses with a herd of about 25-30 at any one time and two stallions. While I want my Schnauzers to be pretty and follow the standard, of the greatest and equal importance is health and temperament. All dogs have annual eye exams and the puppies are all checked before going to new homes as well. As new genetic tests are developed, I plan to use them to scrutinize my breeding stock to the best of my ability.

🐾 Schnauzer Skin Condition Many Owners Don't Learn About Until It's Already a Problem

One of the most common comments I see in Schnauzer groups goes something like:

"My dog suddenly has bumps all over his back."

"Are these allergies?"

"My vet put him on steroids, but they keep coming back."

"What are these blackheads?"

If you own a Miniature, Standard, or Giant Schnauzer, there is a condition you should know about: Schnauzer Comedo Syndrome.

Comedones are essentially plugged hair follicles. They often appear as blackheads, bumps, crusts, scabs, or raised lesions along the back. Some dogs remain mildly affected. Others develop secondary infections, irritation, itching, bleeding, and chronic skin problems requiring ongoing veterinary management.

One reason this condition catches owners by surprise is that it often develops gradually over time.

Schnauzers are a wire-coated breed.

Unlike shedding breeds, dead jacket hair does not simply fall out on its own. It is intended to be removed through carding, raking, or hand-stripping. When dead coat remains trapped in the follicle, it can retain oils, keratin, dirt, and skin debris that would otherwise be shed away.

This does NOT mean every clipped Schnauzer will develop comedones.

It does NOT mean every bump is caused by grooming.

But it does mean that proper wire-coat maintenance deserves to be part of the conversation.

Unfortunately, many owners are never taught the difference between:

✂️ shortening hair

and

🐾 removing dead coat.

A clipper removes visible length.

It does not remove dead wire coat from the follicle.

By the time owners begin noticing blackheads, bumps, crusts, or irritation, the process may have been developing for months or years.

The important thing to understand is that prevention starts long before the first bump appears.

A five-month-old puppy should not be expected to have Schnauzer Comedo Syndrome.

That is exactly why puppy owners should learn about coat maintenance early.

Healthy skin care isn't treatment.

Healthy skin care is prevention.

If you own a Schnauzer, ask your breeder, groomer, or breed mentor about:

✔ Carding ✔ Coat raking ✔ Wire-coat maintenance ✔ Hand-stripping ✔ Schnauzer Comedo Syndrome ✔ Breed-specific grooming

Because "cute" and "healthy" are not always the same thing.

The goal isn't a show coat.

The goal is preserving the health and function of the coat nature gave the breed.

WHAT A BREEDER NEVER SAYS OUT LOUD....!!!!
🤔 People often think that a breeder lives among perfect dogs. But they forget everything that goes into bringing these little miracles into the world. Photos are sweet, but the reality is intense and demanding.
✨ Every birth is a lottery.
You can prepare, plan, and study everything… but not a single delivery goes exactly as hoped.
Every time it feels like the first time, even after years of experience.
😢 Death is our greatest enemy.
A bitch who develops complications, a puppy that doesn't make it…
It happens unexpectedly and breaks your heart every time.
✨ Using a good stud dog costs money and effort.
Travel expenses, matings, tests, nighttime care…
And then hoping that everything goes well: diarrhea, infections, stunted growth.
Breeding is an investment: financial, emotional, and physical.
✨Bottle feeding? Cute, yes… for the first five minutes.
But after that, feeding every 2–3 hours, day and night, for weeks.
That is pure survival mode, with a whole lot of energy as salvation.
🤦‍♀️ People often view puppies as “business”:
“Number of puppies × price = profit!”
But they forget the:
• Health & Genetic testing
• Matings
• Shows
• Training
• Nutrition
• Veterinarian
• Care and hygiene
• Photoshoots, advertising, websit
• Pounds of food and mountains of poop!!🙈
What is left? Rarely a gold bar. Let alone a decent hourly wage 😁
😴 Sleepless nights are inevitable.
No weekends, no vacation, no break.
🤫 Who really raises the puppies?
The bitch… AND the breeder.
Every small infection can threaten an entire litter.
😬 And the question “Why is it so expensive?”
If we got a dollar for every time…
The dogs would be eating caviar instead of kibble or meat.
😵‍💫 Future owners always make us worried.
A puppy isn't a package you just send off.
We choose adopters carefully; sometimes we refuse, sometimes we wait longer.
🫥 Emotional fatigue?
You almost never see that.
The pressure, the responsibility, watching over every detail…
And the loneliness during an emergency.
🤐 Sometimes we want to quit.
After loss. After setbacks. After exhaustion.
And then a pup opens its little eyes… and everything starts all over again.
It is a passion that never lets you go!
🙏 The grief of loss…
We rarely talk about that.
But with every farewell, a piece of us dies with them. Yet we rise again, for the puppies that still need a home.
🥰 Yes, there are beautiful moments.
Yes, there is immense joy.
But behind every experienced breeder lies a path full of sleepless nights, tears…
And an unconditional love for these special animals.♥️🥰♥️
