This moment might have only lasted about 6 seconds, it took me a few seconds to get my phone out and hit record, but this moment means the world to me and has been over 6 years in the making. Russell was one of the first foxes to join the Walking Wild family in March of 2020. After being born and raised on a fur farm, he was then sent to a horrific hoarding situation where he lived without any natural light stacked in cages standing piles of his own urine and f***s. For Russell's entire life he had only known people as cruel abusive and neglectful beings to fear. It took Russell about 6 months to learn that we were not going to hurt him and he was finally safe. However he still was very hesitant about physical interactions or people getting too close. His trauma was so deep that we knew that there was probably never going to be a chance that Russell would ever truly enjoy human interactions but more just tolerate them or appreciate the treats that came with people. Russell has always been a very sweet boy with a very loving and tender spirit, but it wasn't until our eldest daughter Melody was born that Russell really started to come out of his shell. Russell loves kids! Since Melody was born, Russell has continued to trust more and more and finally for the first time in over 6 years he not only accepted being pet but came over and asked for it. He probably would have hung out longer but Falene wanted the attention too.

These moments are what it is all about. Taking an animal that has lived through horrors arrives broken and abused and helping them heal!

From arrival day to today! One year later and Hei Hei looks like a completely different fox. Hei Hei was abandoned at less than a year old and left for dead. With a raging case of mange, fleas eating him alive and no instincts to survive in the wild, he was close to death when he wandered into a barn. The family that found him recognized he was desperate for help, and called us. Hei Hei is now a happy, healthy and handsome boy!

Hei Hei is one of the 32 lives saved that we had to finance expansions for to ensure his life wasn't lost. A few months ago we launched a critical fundraiser to return to a debt free organziation and have not yet reached our goal. Over the past few years we have had to finance some of our emergency expansions to ensure that 32 were not lost. We have always prided ourselves in working debt free and it is vital that we return to that and free up monthly funds that are currently going to paying on these loans. We are $12,000 away from reaching our goal. Paying this debt off would be a game changer for Walking Wild and a huge relief as our monthly expenses continue to grow with the 17 emergency intakes we have welcomed in the past 6 weeks.

Our shy boy Jiminy would like to share something about Walking Wild that maybe not everyone is aware of.

Walking Wild is a unique one-of-a-kind facility in the fox rescue space and provides every single animal a completely enclosed climate controlled indoor space as well as an outdoor space. All of our animals always have access to both of their spaces and can choose if they want to be inside or outside. We feel that this indoor/outdoor setup is vital for many reasons. It ensures a safe space during inclement weather, it allows our animals to stay cool in the Heat and warm in the cold, it allows us to ensure they have a clean living space and means that foxes that are surrendered to us that have never been outside don't have the physical stress of no longer having a climate controlled environment. It means foxes with medical issues or poor coat quality due to breeding can stay comfortable and safe. It also is important for shy foxes like Jiminy who don't enjoy being in the same space that people are. It means that if we are outside Jiminy can go inside and if we are inside Jimmy can go outside. He has 200 ft of space (half of his enclosure) that he can have fun in where people are not if he so chooses, rather than having to hide in a small dog house or shelter as his only escape and potentially feeling overwhelmed and cornered when people are present. We are a forever home to every fox and animal that is surrendered to our sanctuary. This means, that it is our job to not just provide them with an adequate space, but with the best space we can and the space that they can live their lives comfortably and happily.

Here walking wild we truly are a unique, one-of-a-kind fox sanctuary and we strive to put every need of our animals first in all that we do. We are here to help and care for them the best we are able.
