As someone who is highly allergic to poison ivy, I love the idea of this spray which would reveal the presence of the urushiol oil which causes the rash! I always stay far away from poison ivy but many summers, I seem to catch it from petting dogs who have played in it. This spray would be a lifesaver for me!

It's about time! A registry for convicted animal abusers! If this legislation passes, New York City would become the largest jurisdiction to establish an animal abuse registry. This registry would require pet stores and shelters to check the registry before the animal is released to the prospective home. The goal is to reduce the number of abused animals and limit the ability of animal abusers to commit offenses in the future. Previously, legislation like this has been difficult to pass because of costs. Perhaps fund raising efforts coupled with large fines for convicted animal abusers would help fund this essential bill?!

Thank you to Massachusetts for becoming the 13th state barring localities from enacting breed specific regulation!! Breed specific legislation (BSL) is a term for laws that regulate or ban certain breeds in effort to reduce the number of dog attacks. There is no evidence that BSL is effective in making communities safer and the enforcement of BSL is inhumane. Many of you followed, petitioned, or protested the inhumane destruction of Pit bull mix, Lennox, in Northern Ireland. We hope that Lennox's legacy will promote awareness and ban BSL! Outlawing certain breeds does not address dog aggression issues and has a number of unintended consequences. Most dog aggression cases involve unneutered/unspayed dogs (97% of dogs involved in fatal attacks were unneutred/unspayed). Additionally, chained/tethered dogs are more likely to bite, and most of these dogs were abused, neglected, or not properly cared for by their owners. Let's promote breed neutral laws which hold the dog owners accountable and encourage spaying/neutering, proper containment, training, socialization, and care of dogs.

Fourth of July Fact- Your dog is probably not as patriotic as you are when it comes to fireworks. Dog’s hearing is at least 10 times more sensitive than human's hearing. Dogs can feel very traumatized by fireworks and have severe anxiety attacks. Here are a few tips to ensure that you can minimize the affects of fireworks on your dog. Keep your dog inside, in a location as insulated as possible from the noise. If your dog enjoys his/her crate, it can be the most safe and secure feeling place in the house. Turn on music or the tv to help muffle and distract from the noise. Close the curtains and turn on the lights, as the flashing lights of fireworks can be as alarming to your dog as the noise. If you can spend time inside with your dog during this time that will give your dog the most secure feeling. However, if you know that you’ll be outside enjoying the fireworks, spend quality time with your dog beforehand. Go for a very long walk earlier in the day (pre-fireworks) to tire out your dog, this will lower his/her stress level later on. Give your dog a relaxing massage with essential oils like lavender for relaxation or play fetch or a game of catch, as a tired and relaxed dog will be less anxious. If you will be home with your dog, practice some counter-conditioning exercises. Prior to the fireworks starting and continued through the fireworks, engage your dog with some of his/her favorite things like their favorite toys, special treats, favorite games that he/she only gets at special times. Anything that will be special, highly motivating, and will actively engage your dog’s attention, this will minimize their focus on the fireworks and perhaps he/she will even have a build a positive association to the fireworks. Another recommendation, which helps many dogs with anxiety, are compression vests like the Thundershirt or homeopathic herbs like valerian root, or Ceva’s Adaptil Collar. For severe cases of anxiety, talk to your vet about other solutions for reducing your dog’s anxiety.
