My dog Turbo, whom I adopted six months ago, has helped me heal from the loss of a cherished friendship with my buddy, Otis. When I first met Turbo, he had been abandoned at the 110th St. 6 train stop, but was now living between fosters and the Manhattan ACC.
The door opened to a metallic resonance of crammed kennels rows steeping with fear in all varieties at once. His enclosure was the first cell, a ferocious barking 90 lb teeth filled demon, that smelled the cortisol firing away within me. I stepped back, rattled but hiding it. I was an intruder in the machine that he lived in.
Leaving that room I couldn’t believe this was the dog I was told I should meet. Moments later, I met Turbo outside, on his terms, with the adoption walker outside to go on a walk with them. Things moved slower. He was a sweet and tender dog with his walker. I watched his carceral programming melt. The walker let me hold the leash. Turbo and I connected then and there. During the ride home to his new life, I promised him that his best days were ahead.
Brooklyn Bark provided me with the chance to bond with many more dogs, allowing me to meet them on their terms and develop new relationships while learning the unique language they share with one another and their human companions. When I’m walking someone’s dog it’s sacred. Thanks to the training I received, I’ve become a better dog dad and caretaker. I’ve never felt more fulfilled in my work
