The Boston Terrier, a breed renowned for its distinctive “tuxedo” markings and amiable disposition, takes its name from its city of origin: Boston, USA. The breed’s journey began in the late 19th century, with the first official club established in Boston in the 1890s. Initially, membership was exclusive to Bostonians, but the breed’s charm quickly propelled it to national fame, becoming the most popular breed in the USA by the 1950s.
As the smallest of the “Bull breeds,” the Boston Terrier carries Bulldog lineage. The breed’s foundation is often attributed to Hooper’s Judge, a dog born in Liverpool, England. A cross between a Bulldog and an English White Terrier, Hooper’s Judge was exported to America. He passed on the brindle markings from his Bulldog heritage and white markings from his Terrier ancestry. This smart brindle and white color pattern remains the accepted standard for the breed today. The characteristic white markings on the legs, chest, collar, and head lend the Boston Terrier a dapper appearance, leading to the term “Boston marked” being applied to other breeds with similar colorations, such as Mantle Great Danes.
