Chez, It's been a couple of weeks so I figure it's time for another update. Sheba is doing very well, she is acclimating to country life like she was born here. She is off leash and responding well to commands. I see her making more strides every day. She respects ducks, chickens and rabbits to a degree but she is still overbearing when it comes to the cats. I really don't think she would hurt them intentionally as she likes to greet everyone and everything with overwhelming exuberance. Sheba was spayed this past Tuesday and has gotten a clean bill of health with everything else. There is one huge downfall to her - she farts worse than any other dog I can remember !!!! Wow are they ever potent. Well that about covers the highlights. ~ Nikki

Dear Friend of Animals,

The Vet Mobile had a great day on Midland Ave in Staten Island on Sunday March 10th. As usual, the overwhelming crowd initially needed some work but once that was addressed, we treated 41 animals. Many of our patients were seniors who were due for blood tests, whose guardians could not possibly afford due to virtually being wiped out financially and literally.

Thanks to the office of Assemblywoman Malliotakis the Free Vet Mobile for SI Sandy victims has found a sponsor for a third day, to be held on
Sunday April 7, 2013, again at Midland Ave & Kiswick Street.

All 41 cats and all 3 dogs are out of Kingston in the safety of private homes as adopted or fostered to be placed by no kill groups or went directly to a no kill group. The cat Nemo that was horribly injured by a dog when Kingston City building inspector Jill and landlords Michael and Chris Piazza opened the six cages that contained 3 dogs and 3 cats each was sent to Dr Rug at Kingston Animal Hospital to be euthanized.

"The ACC should be networking, contacting independent rescues and groups to literally outsource former housecats that are surrendered or seized: animals that are already neutered and spayed, ASPA tattooed individuals, overweight and declawed cats all show signs of former ownership and should be placed elsewhere. Animals over the age of 8 should be also sorted out elsewhere."

DO NOT call the shelter and say you are adopting unless you truly intend on physically going to the shelter to adopt the dog. It ties up phones lines and is a waste of the staff's time to explain the adoption procedure over the phone for someone who is purposely not going to show up. They need every free second of their time to answer calls, assist actual adopters, process intakes, and care for the animals. More importantly, they will note the dog’s file that an adopter is en route which will prevent an actual adopter from saving the dog. This is considered a "fake adoption" hold and that is how dogs fall through the cracks and end up being killed.

For more information on a particular dog, email [email protected] but ONLY if serious about adopting, and ONLY if you are able to GO TO the shelter in-person. Please do not email for status updates... the only thing you will accomplish is spamming their in boxes and causing REAL adopter emails to go unnoticed. Contact the NYC ACC at (212) 788-4000 for further automated instructions.

*** Dog is extremely thin at time of assessment. ***

Max pulls on the leash and was sociable toward the handler during the assessment - soft body. He was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. He engages in play, loose body, wags tail, mouth is open. He was stiff and cannot be pushed out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. He put his body between assessor and toy & rawhide, showing no growling or stiffness. Max approached the helper dog with playful body language.

Look: 1. Dog's eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor's cupped hands.

Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth.

Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft 'popping' of the body, etc.

03/02/2013 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Named after the street on which she was found, Beck is all wiggles and play. She did a play bow for me in the elevator on the way down to go out and continued her playfulness the entire time we were out walking. "Going" as soon as we were out the door indicates she may be housetrained. As we crossed the street a small feather blew towards us in the wind and Beck chased and played with it as we walked down the street - there was no question in her mind that everything was there for her amusement. She is a gorgeous girl in a well groomed and cared for coat at the perfect weight for her size. She is playful and fun and funny. Beck's tail wags non stop as she surveys the area around her pulling hard towards squirrels and the resident park cats so a home without cats is likely best for her. Beck was a rock star for her photo shoot, showing me that she can take this job very seriously at times wearing her "OK, I'm getting serious now" face. She's a delight! She can get a bit mouthy when playing but does respond to a firm no and settles down. Miss Beck is looking for a family who will appreciate her energy is ready to go on long walks and perhaps toss a ball for her. Meet Beck today.
