During an incoming tide in 2024 near Cape Romain, South Carolina, a sandpiper became stuck upside-down in soft tidal mud, unable to regain its footing. Water slowly rose around the exhausted bird. A horseshoe crab crawled beneath it and pushed upward repeatedly until the sandpiper regained balance and escaped toward higher mud.
