Hey y'all, I rarely use this page these days but wanted to share something from my other non-work life that is relevant.
Some of you know that some members (including me) of the mutual aid group I work with in service of El Pueblo in New Orleans East were recently interviewed by the New York Times about the heartbreaking pet situation out there and our work around it. You might remember me posting about trying to rescue some puppies from under a house. (We did rescue 3 of them and they all got adopted via the LA SPCA. The reporting in this article about 2 of them freezing to death is not accurate.)
Well the article finally came out this morning and while it's not the article we hoped for and the writer didn't use most of the information we gave her, it's still good to see reporting on this issue that most folks haven't realized is such a crisis all over the country and especially here. (No, I am not in the article.)
The reporter also got the name of the organization wrong (she wrote Nola Village when the name is El Pueblo - Nola Village).
Anyway, we FINALLY have our fiscal sponsorship via lowernine.org worked out and have a functioning QR code and Paypal link for general donations i.e. our food pantry which includes pet food too. The pantry is currently very empty and we could use the community's support to restock it so we can continue covering the families of those affected by ICE detentions and deportations, which are often mothers and their babies/children.

We will be tabling at No Kings 3 NOLA on Saturday March 28th from 2-6pm where we will gladly take your donations and we have some awesome donor gifts like buttons, tshirts and super cool guillotine earrings and pendants! (pics coming eventually but we're still putting it all together.)
Come find us on the Great Lawn on the Lafitte Greenway!
As immigrant detentions and self-deportations soar, animal welfare groups in cities like New Orleans scramble to feed, foster and re-home the pets left behind.
