There is apparently a rumor going around that the dam is going to be removed this fall and the water level will be dropped. That is not correct. This is from Phil Quint of USDA who is involved with the dam project.
We still waiting for the final design at this point, which after that we will schedule a meeting with you all to review and see what next steps are. Carolyn from HBMI and I set a data logger out on the Putnam property last week to monitor water levels of the lake until freeze up. That might be where that rumor came from. Nothing will be moving forward at the dam location without the Drews Lake Association approval. I still haven’t been provided a date of when the design will be done but hoping very soon and will be reaching out. I will keep you posted as I know more.

If Daniel can gather enough customers, he will pick up at the lakes. He is already picking up at some places in New Limerick. You would have to bag your trash because he doesn't have a compactor truck yet. It's a lot less expensive than what is now available. Contact him for price, days available and any other information. This trash would go to Northern Katahdin Valley Waste Distribution of which New Limerick is one of the owner towns and where our trash should be going to support it.

I’ve decided I am going to do mobile shrink wrapping for fishing boats, pontoons, and jet skis this fall. The rate will be $12 per foot of the boat including the motor. I do not offer storage of boats, just the shrink wrapping service on location.

Mother cat was seen all around the Little Lake of the North Shore for at least a week. Would all of you property owners take a walk around your property and listen for cries of hunger, please and thank you! We want to save these babies!

Update 2: Those of you who have seen the mom cat, C J Virgie at Houlton Humane asks that you please look for more kittens. She thinks there are more and that they will be crying loudly because they are hungry. That crying may attract predators. It sounds as though the mom was staying in the Brown Trout Lane/Chickadee Lane area of the North Shore. The mom and kitten are now at Houlton Humane.

Update: The mom and kitten are now with a foster family who is caring for other kittens and they are safe and being well cared for.

From Stephanie White: Good afternoon! We will be having a 50th birthday celebration at the lake on Aug 22nd. We will be having a fireworks display in the evening. I know that many on the lake have pets and some may be timid of the fireworks. I would just like to make people aware ahead of time. Thank you!

The demonstration project is made possible by "Friends of NACD" grant and will feature ecological landscape designer Rebecca Jacobs. From one of our responsible lake people: Some from this group know me and know that I fish the lake a lot. I love the little gem we call home and will do my part to help protect it just like I do on any lake that I visit. I take my boat out approximately 30 times a year and love the lake and the scenery, minus the windmills. My first question is does anyone from the group monitor the boating on the lake? I am specifically taking about reckless boating and going too fast inside the 200' distance from the shoreline where it is law that its headway speed only, (the slowest speed at which a boat can move while still keeping its steering and control. It is often defined as a slow pace that does not create a large wave or wake.) I witness this being violated all of the time and have read about members warning about it on the page but yet it continues. I'm a big safety conscious person being a retired Firefighter/EMT and don't want to step on anyone's toes but two weeks ago I had no choice to step in and educate two young girls which I'm guessing were around 10-12 years old doing donuts in a small aluminum boat in 2-3' of water 20' off the shore. I was fishing out on the main lake and watched this for a good while before I cut my day short to go speak with them. The motor destroyed a lot of vegetation and in that shallow water they could have easily hit one of the big rocks submerged just below the surface and flipped which wouldn't have ended up well. Yesterday when I was there there was what I assume was a father and his young son hanging onto him speeding within 40-50' of the shore in the little lake while on a jet ski sending waves up onto the shore and risking hitting a submerged rock and flipping. By the looks of the entire lake yesterday morning I'm going to go out on a limb and say there was a lot of boats riding too close to shore as the lake was loaded with grass, weeds, and lily pads that were newly destroyed by boat props in shallow water. These weeds and little pads are an important part of the lakes ecosystem and should not be killed by reckless boaters. I guess what I am asking is would there be enough volunteers that would be willing to start a safety patrol mainly on weekends during the busy season that would stop these violators and just talk to them and spread the word about the rules of the water. It's way better than having a warden patrol the lake and issuing tickets. I would gladly volunteer a few weekends if others would pitch in. Another solution would be to ask the state about supplying some (slow speed no wake buoys and signs) to place around the lake as visual reminders about speeding too close to shore. It will keep boaters safe and the lake healthy. Thanks for any consideration towards this and feel free to reach out to me for any help that I may lend.
