Please stay away from all loon nesting sites. We want as many babies to survive as possible. We have taken away a lot of their habitat, so please respect where they have found a safe place to nest. Thank you!

From Mike Fasulo:
On Thursday, June 4, I noticed a loon couple nesting on the North end of the island off the South Shore called "Loon Island" by some and "Blueberry Island" by others. Over the years, without much success, I have tried putting signs up to encourage people to stay off the island during nesting and to keep dogs off, in order to give the loons a fighting chance to produce a chick or two. I'm not sure exactly when they began nesting but probably a couple of days before I spotted them. That means they will probably be nesting almost until the 4th of July. Instead of posting signs, I'm wondering if you could post something about this on the Drews Lake page. If so, I would try to let you know if/when a chick hatches or if the nest fails.

Some kayaks have been seen close to the island. If the loons feel that their nest is not safe, they will leave the eggs and we won't have any babies this year. Please stay away to protect them.

There is a loon nesting on the little island in front of Rusty Taylor's camp on Salmon Lane, North Shore. Rusty sent the photo.

From Chris Putnam:
Dear Lake lovers.... As summer comes, so do boaters and visitors to beautiful Drews Lake. As a matter of fact there is even a fishing derby on June 27th and 28th on Drews Lake and Nickerson Lake. The Derby is shaping up to be a well attended event bringing fishermen from around New England and Canada. Something we may want to think about is having some volunteers on the public landing for those dates or at least for Saturday morning. Boats from many waters will be visiting and could be hiding invasive plants on their hull, stuck on props etc... It may be prudent to do boat inspections to insure our body of water is protected from invasive plants. Most boaters are aware that they have to clean their boats and motors off but its always better safe than sorry. I just wanted to make everyone aware of the event so you can make any plans you may feel necessary and or prudent.
The folks at Nickerson lake have taken it upon themselves to have boat inspections at Nickerson for the event. I am sure the event will draw many more boats than normally would be on the lake that weekend.

Ice out was on April 22nd. Loons were back on April 19th and these two girls had the first swim of the year on April 17th. You can see the ice had not left yet. Brian and Sally Cole's granddaughters!

A note from Laurine Thompson Wilson : This morning we met a four wheeler on the North Shore Rd. with two young teens on it headed out. When we approached them, they pulled safely over and let us pass.
Shortly after we met a car coming in pretty fast and we worried about the two young boys on the four wheeler so we stopped and watched in our rear view mirror as the car approached the corner. They got past the four wheeler OK but the four wheeler was on the incoming side of the road when they met the car.
Please caution your children or visiting vacation children to use caution on the North Shore Road. Vehicles often drive on the wrong side of the road to avoid a pothole!
Let’s keep a watchful eye out for each other, please! Enjoy school vacation and a hearty welcome to the loons that have returned!
