On one of my flights, my lead flight attendant quietly told me, âWe have an H.R. on this flight.â (H.R. stands for human remains).
I asked, âIs it military?â
âYes,â she replied.
âIs there an es**rt?â
âYes, Iâve seated him already.â
I asked her to send him to the cockpit. Soon, a young Army sergeant entered. Perfectly uniformed, he introduced himself. Escorts always speak as if their soldier is still with them. He told me, âMy soldier is on his way home to Virginia.â
I thanked him, told him he had one of the hardest jobs in the service, and shook his hand.
Later in the flight, the lead attendant called againâthis time with a heavy voice. âCaptain, the soldierâs family is on board tooâhis mother, father, wife, and little daughter. Theyâre upset they didnât get to see him before departure. The father asked if they could be present when heâs taken off the plane.â
I immediately contacted our dispatcher. Hours passed, but finally, the response came: A special es**rt team would meet us. The family would be allowed onto the ramp, beside their sonâs casket, in privacy. They would also be present when he was loaded onto the next flight home.
When we landed, the ramp controller told us, âAll traffic is being held for you.â I realized we needed to let the family off first. Before parking at the gate, I made an announcement:
âLadies and gentlemen, this is your Captain. We have a passenger on board who deserves our highest honor. Private [Name], who gave his life in service to our country, is with us in the cargo hold. His es**rt, Sergeant [Name], and his family are also on boardâhis father, mother, wife, and young daughter. We ask that you remain seated to allow them to leave first. Thank you.â
When we stopped, not a single passenger stood up. The family gathered their things and began to walk down the aisle. Then, quietly at first, someone began clapping. Soon, the entire cabin joined in. Words of sympathy, gratitude, and blessing filled the air as the family left to be with their fallen hero.
Even after many years in the cockpit, I will never forget that moment. It was a reminder that freedom is not freeâand that behind every uniform is a family who sacrifices too.
