www.HSNBA.org The Humane Society of the New Braunfels Area is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization. We can do it. Donate.

We are not funded by the city, the county, or any national humane organizations. HSNBA holds contracts with the City of New Braunfels and Comal County to house stray animals brought in by their Animal Control Divisions. We also accept stray pets brought in by citizens and if space allows, pets whose owners can no longer care for them. Therefore, we are inundated daily with homeless pets and have n

o control over the number or type of animals that enter our shelter. We handle approximately 5,000 animals a year and at any given time care for approximately 100 cats and 100 dogs. The revenue we collect from our contracts covers approximately three days of care per animal and their intake vaccinations. If the animal stays longer, or needs any veterinary care, we rely on donations and adoption fees to cover those costs. The pet overpopulation problem is real and while the bulk of the burden falls on the shoulders of the HSNBA, it is a community problem - a problem that the community and HSNBA can solve if we work together. You can help. Volunteer. Adopt.

Foster Feature - Meet Donna! 😻

Donna is ready for adoption and excited to meet you! Here’s what her foster caregiver had to say:

“Are you looking for a well-socialized and adaptable kitten? Then meet Donna! This beautiful five-month-old Calico has been thriving in foster care since September. She's proven to be a wonderful companion to other foster cats and possesses a remarkably mellow and friendly personality. Donna is a true sunbather and lap-cat in the making, always seeking warmth and affection. Recently, she even surprised her foster mom by enjoying a trunk-or-treat event, where she calmly greeted children and accepted their petting. Donna's unique coloring and charming tail make her a standout. She's ready to find her forever family and bring her sweet spirit to your home!”

Donna is joining us tomorrow, October 31st, at Pet Supplies Plus - New Braunfels, TX, from 11 AM to 3 PM for a kitten adoption event! The kittens at this event will be spayed/neutered, up to date on age-appropriate vaccines, treated for common parasites and fleas, and microchipped!

You can complete an adoption form at www.hsnba.org/adopt, or just come see us tomorrow at Pet Supplies Plus!

Foster Feature – Meet Sage!

Sage came to HSNBA in August after being found as a stray in Comal County. She was terrified when she first arrived and spent nearly a month at the shelter before heading off to a wonderful foster home where she has blossomed into the loving and confident dog we always knew she could be.

At just one year old and only 15 pounds, Sage may be small, but her heart is huge. She’s ready for a family of her own, one that will continue helping her build confidence in a patient, understanding, and loving environment.

Here’s what Sage had to say about herself:

“Hi! It’s me, Sage! I’ve been making great progress in my foster home. I play with my foster mom’s dogs, sleep in her bedroom, and follow the family routine. We go outside first thing in the morning and then have breakfast together. I’ve learned to potty on command when we go outside, and I even use training pads if needed, though I rarely need them now.

I’m still a little shy and sometimes get startled by loud noises or new things, but I’m learning every day that the world isn’t so scary. My foster mom says I’m sweet, gentle, and doing great.

I’d love to find a quiet, patient home where I can feel safe, loved, and keep growing into my best self. Maybe we can spend our first Halloween together?” 🎃💚

Visit www.hsnba.org/adopt to complete an adoption form. After you’re approved, our adoption team will connect you with Sage’s foster to set up a time to meet. Don’t let this little cutie pass you up! 💕🐾

🚨 We Need Your Help! 🚨

October has been one of the most difficult months we’ve faced at HSNBA. In just 29 days, 487 pets have come through our doors. That’s compared to 277 pets in October 2024. It’s an unprecedented level of intake, and we are completely out of space for the pets still arriving every single day.

As an open-intake animal shelter, HSNBA holds contracts with the City of New Braunfels and Comal County to house stray pets brought in by animal control and citizens. We are the safety net for stray animals in our community, and when they need us, we can’t turn them away. That’s why we’re turning to you, our community, for help during this critical time.

Right now, more than anything, we need foster homes and adopters to help us open space in our overcrowded kennels. We’re doing everything we can with the limited space and resources available, even setting up pop-up cages in hallways to house incoming dogs. But that setup comes with challenges: these cages have no solid walls, meaning constant barking and stress for the dogs nearby. It also increases the risk of illness spreading, especially when stress levels are already so high.

This isn’t sustainable long-term, and it’s not the environment we want for any animal waiting for their Second Chance at a First Class Life.

We need to start moving pets out of the shelter TODAY, and we want to make it easy for you to help!

Our foster program provides everything you need to succeed, from vaccines and vet care to dewormers, food, litter, and kennels. Our experienced staff will help match you with a dog or cat that fits your home and schedule.

🐾 Urgent Cat/Kitten Foster Call: Help Us Save Lives! 🐾

This October, we've seen a 100% increase in cat and kitten intakes compared to last year. Our shelter is overwhelmed, and we urgently need your help to provide safe, loving homes for these vulnerable animals.

We urgently need fosters for:
- Single kittens who just need a few weeks to grow strong enough for spay/neuter surgery.
- Weaning kittens who need some time and encouragement learning how to eat.
- Ringworm kittens requiring a safe, sterile, and low-stress environment to heal.

Many of these kittens are already litter box trained and simply need a quiet space to play, eat, and gain confidence. Your home could be the sanctuary they need to thrive.

Why Foster?
- Save lives by providing a temporary home for kittens in need.
- Receive full support from HSNBA, including supplies and guidance.
- Flexible commitment options to fit your schedule.

Meet Scooby 🐾

Thank you to the New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung for featuring Scooby as the October “Shelter Spotlight” pet of the month!

Scooby is a 5-year-old, 101-pound Rottweiler with a heart as big as his blocky head! After his original owner passed away in early 2025, Scooby came to HSNBA and spent some time in a loving foster home before being adopted. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out in his new home, and he’s back with us in the comfort of the same foster who cared for him the first time. He’s still the same affectionate, gentle giant, just waiting for the right family to find him.

Scooby is happiest when he’s surrounded by his people, and it doesn’t take much to become one of “his people.” He’s so loving and affectionate that he considers everyone he meets a friend! He’s great with kids, adults, and seniors alike, and he’s been fantastic with other dogs both in his foster home and at daycare. Scooby has made more than 50 canine friends during his time in foster and loves spending his mornings playing with them and his afternoons lounging in comfort.

He’s also a great walking buddy who enjoys his one-hour morning strolls, car rides to town, and curling up on the couch next to his favorite humans. At night, he’s content snoozing on his dog bed beside your bed.

Scooby would thrive in a home where he can be indoors when his people aren’t home, as he doesn’t like being left outside alone. He needs a cat-free home (and one without chickens, bunnies, turtles, or other critters to chase), but he’s the perfect companion for anyone looking for a loyal, loving dog who gives back every ounce of affection he gets.

Scooby is a special boy who’s been through a lot, and we know his perfect match is out there. ❤️

Want to meet him? Complete an adoption form at www.hsnba.org/adopt, and our staff will connect you with his foster caregiver to arrange a meet-and-greet!

Feel Good Friday Adoption Update! 💞

Sunglasses at Midnight, now known as Salem, first entered our doors as part of our Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program. Most of the time, when cats go through the TNR program, they are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, treated for parasites and fleas, ear-tipped, and then returned to the same area where they have been thriving. Sometimes, cats aren’t welcome back to their original location, and that was the case with Salem. She was so scared when she first entered the shelter, but after completing TNR surgery and while waiting for a working cat home, we noticed that she was SO LOVING and made the decision to put her through our regular adoption program. That is how Salem met the family that is now giving her the loving home she deserves!

“Sunglasses at Midnight is now named Salem! Salem Massachusetts Beatrice, to be exact!

We were expecting her to take a few weeks to acclimate to us & the house, but it literally only took her 3 days. The first night, she chose to sleep under the couch, which is respectable. The second day, she was out roaming around the house & smelling everything & coming up on the couch with me while I read! On the second night, she helped herself & climbed into bed with us & slept on my pillow by my head ALL NIGHT! By day 3, she was acting like she OWNED the house!

She loves her huge gothic vampire mansion cat tower, toy mice, & RIBBONS! She LOOOOVES ribbons. She will carry them around the house & when she gets her nighttime zoomies, she DARTS & parkour all over the place with the ribbons in her mouth.

She is a huge ham & the best decision I have made this year. The transition after losing my late cat, Speckle, to stomatitis & bone cancer in her jaw earlier this year, I was devastated & lost a piece of myself. Salem has OVERFILLED that missing piece & shows similarities in a lot of ways to Speckle. But also equally is her own special kitty in herself. I’ve attached some pictures for yall!!”

What a great story with a happy tail at the end! Congratulations to Salem and her awesome family! ♥️
